"Fra gli ultimi anni dell'Ottocento e la fine della prima decade del Novecento gli interessi di Roger Fry (1866-1934) si concentrarono principalmente sull'arte italiana, e gli scritti su Mantegna qui tradotti sono da ascrivere al periodo che precedette la scoperta del postimpressionismo. Rivelano le qualità di Fry come critico, conoscitore e storico dell'arte: l'abilità sia nella generalizzazione sia nell'acuta osservazione del dettaglio, la ricerca indefessa delle qualità estetiche essenziali, l'attenzione alla tecnica, e al suo significato, derivata dalla convinzione che "l'eccellenza nella tecnica consiste sempre nella sua capacità di adattarsi perfettamente all'espressione dell'idea". Va ricordato che Fry era anche restauratore di quadri, conosceva per esperienza personale le possibilità e i limiti del mezzo, e sapeva parlarne in termini appropriati. E proprio questa capacità di giudicare il quadro da un duplice punto di vista - come pittore, affrontando problemi attuali di colore e di composizione, e come spettatore, con atteggiamento estetico, poetico e filosofico - a conferire profondità e allo stesso tempo freschezza ai suoi scritti."
