Il pittore Jeroen Anthoniszoon van Aken, meglio noto come Hieronymus Bosch, non è solo uno dei più grandi maestri della pittura fiamminga, anzi universale: è soprattutto un enigma rimasto insoluto nei secoli. Dalle sue opere superstiti, tecnicamente di avanguardia fra la fine del Quattrocento e l'inizio del Cinquecento, si irradia un messaggio, un insegnamento, un'affermazione di cui si è perduta la chiave. Le sue opere affascinano tuttora, ma restano avvolte nel mistero.
The author's purpose was to acquaint the reader with some of the forces that have caused change in the past, looking in particular at eight innovations: the atomic bomb, the telephone, the computer, the production-line system of manufacture, the aircraft, plastics, the guided rocket and television. Binding is solid and square in black cloth with silver print on cover and spine, a few light scratches on back cover; covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind save prev. owner name at front. ill., ril. Non stupiamoci se, al giorno d'oggi, Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516) resta ancora un enigma. Anche per i contemporanei le opere del pittore olandese risultavano di difficile decifrazione - e presentano numerosi punti oscuri anche agli occhi degli storici dell'arte contemporanei. Parte del problema della decodificazione dei suoi dipinti, sconvolgenti e fortemente allegorici, è dovuta al fatto che non si conosce praticamente alcunché dell'artista stesso, tranne il luogo di nascita. Non abbiamo notizie della sua vita né della sua formazione, nessuna lettera personale, né diari o taccuini, e nessun contributo coevo relativo alla sua personalità né riflessioni sul significato della sua arte. Anche la sua data di nascita può essere solo approssimata, basandosi su un disegno che si ritiene essere un autoritratto realizzato poco prima della sua morte, avvenuta nel 1516, e che si presume ritragga l'artista quasi settantenne. Bosch resta un mistero come il mondo che ha dipinto. Benché radicato nella tradizione della pittura fiamminga, Bosch sviluppò un linguaggio formale fortemente soggettivo e suggestivo. Con un misto di religiosa mestizia e umorismo satanico, illustrò sia le delizie del Paradiso sia le torture crudelmente fantasiose dell'Inferno. Nel suo mondo pittorico brulicante di incubi surrealisti, l'immaginazione medievale si infiamma in un ultimo momento di grande fulgore prima di soccombere all'Umanesimo e al razionalismo moderno.

Figuren und Anatomie sind oft altertümlich, die Landschaften sind auf der Höhe der Zeit und darüber hinaus. Wegen, der mannigfachen Überschneidungen und der Schwierigkeit, ein Bild einem bestimmten ikonographischen Zusammenhang eindeutig zuzuordnen, ist auch eine ikonographische Gliederung nur eine der Möglichkeiten. Sie impliziert zum Beispiel die Unterscheidung von christlicher und weltlicher Ikonographie. Das hat seine Berechtigung, scheint aber hier unzureichend.
