South-West View of the Old Horse Guards

Engraving by Fellows after a drawing of 1749 in the collection of George Hibbert by the renowned Italian topographical painter etcher and draughtsman Canaletto. Very good condition apart from some minor foxing a light waterstain in the top margin and a skillfully repaired 2 1/8" tear in the top left margin. Barely visible mild crease extending through the center of the image. A beautifully rendered view of the Horse Guards as seen from Whitehall from Smith's "Antiquities of Westminster." Constructed in 1745 to accommodate the old palace guards the Horse Guards Parade was and remains today one of London's largest open public spaces. Visible at the end of the parade ground are the distinctive Horse Guard buildings which were designed by William Kent and erected in 1755. The series from which this plate comes was originally begun with the intention of documenting the fourteenth-century murals sculptures and stained glass discovered during the expansion of the House of Commons. It evolved however into an ambitious and detailed survey involving several artists and engravers of the various buildings of the Palace of Westminster. Comprised of numerous plates several supplementary plates were later published in 1809 accompanied by the descriptive text of John Sidney Hawkins and Smith Antiquities of Westminster constitutes an invaluable visual record of the appearance of the Westminster before it succumbed to the fire of 1834. John Thomas Smith an antiquarian of high repute was also a talented etcher. His published work focuses almost entirely on London and its environs and he was unusual for his time in that he recorded all strata of society. A pupil of the Royal Academician Joseph Nollekens and the mezzotint engraver John Keyse Sherwin Smith began his career as engraver and topographical draughtsman. His first publication Antiquities of London and its Environs 1800 was followed by his magnum opus Antiquities of Westminster 1807. In 1816 Smith became the keeper of prints and drawings at the British Museum a position he held for the duration of his life. He completed The Ancient Topography of London in 1815 and continued to publish various literary and illustrated works throughout his life including a well-received biography of Nollekens in 1828 and Cries of London 1839. View of Westminster Taken Upon the Thames at the Period of the Building of the Bridge

Very good condition apart from some minor foxing a few mild creases in the bottom margin and slight discolouration of the paper due to age. A beautifully rendered panoramic view of the borough of Westminster during the construction of Westminster Bridge from Smith's "Antiquities of Westminster." Built by the engineer Charles Labelye based on a design by Colon Campbell Westminster Bridge was erected between 1738 and 1750. During its construction ships could still pass underneath the bridges' arches the undersides of which were reinforced by supportive wooden structures erected by James King. The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge

174714691747. Copper plate engraving with hand coloring on cream laid paper with the Arms of France watermark a crown in shield topped by a fleur-de-lys and the letters GR 22 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches 576 x 400 mm wide to full margins. Multiple vertical and horizontal creases from folding and rolling; none appear to be particularly hard there is however some associated cockling. While there is some minor mat tone visible around the perimeter of the sheet the extensive handcoloring remains extremely fresh and saturated in the intended areas. There are edge tears at each the right and left sheet edge outside of the image area due to an improper effort to mount the sheet to a mat. Otherwise in very good condition with all issues being consistent with age. The print is wrongly titled "The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge." It in fact shows the north prospect of the bridge with vessels and passengers on the River Thames. Also included is a key to the buildings and the vessels. A vast of array of boats of numerous different shapes and sizes are dotted throughout the waters of the River Thames. The composition is dissected horizontally by the old Westminster Bridge which is reflected in the calm glassy water below. The recognisable buildings of Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall are seen to the right of the bridge and the former building of the House of Commons labelled 'E' is behind in roughly the same location as the current building. There had been proposals to construct a bridge across the River Thames at Westminster as far back as the Restoration period of 1660 to 1700 but it was not until 1738 that an engineer Charles Labelye was appointed to bring the project to fruition. Westminster Bridge was opened in 1750 and was after London Bridge only the second masonry structure to cross the Thames. The present cast-iron bridge was constructed over a century later between 1854 and 1862. - United Kingdon Government Art Collection 2023. unknown
