Exhibition catalogue for the show at the Barbican Art Gallery with the title of the same name. Book is in excellent condition in black cloth with gilt print at spine, large oblong format. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears. 191 pages with large prints in color, some b&w throughout. From the preface: "Over the centuries London has been visited by many artists from abroad and this exhibition is an attempt to illustrate how each visitor has in turn found inspiration from the city. The exhibition interprets this 'image' of London, reveals how the city has changed through four hundred years, and explores the idea of the city in the mind of the visitors and their response to it. Wyngaerde was the earlist artist to attempt to represent the city with relative accuracy. He conceived London as a great Gothic city with many towers and spires. Thomas Wyek may have witnessed the Great Fire, and he certainly painted several views of it. After the Fire, London was rapidly rebuilt and expanded. The subsequent completion of the new cathedral and the City's increasing commercial success attracted many traveller-artists. With its bustling market, Covent Garden was a favourite subject of the 18th-century artists such as Van Aken and Angillis. By contrast the serene Thames views of Canaletto and Joli recall Venice, and their interpretation of London as a city of grace and enlightenment seem more in keeping with the neo-classical order that fashioned the second half of the 18th Century. In the 19th Century artists began to depict the darker side of London. Focusing upon scenes of labour, poverty and suffering in an oppressive industrial environment, G?ricault and Dor? portrayed the Babylonian image of London. Nevertheless, Victorian London was also shown as a city of success and wealth. The river scenes of Whistler, and the busy, yet fashionable Street scenes of Bianche, Tissot and De Nittis represent it as essentially a hive of activity, business and busy-ness. Wistler and Monet were also inspired by the atmosphere of London, the foggy and nocturnal views ...

Two volumes (one of text, one of plates), complete. First and only edition of the standard catalogue raisonnÈ of Della Bella's prints. De Vesme's catalogue initially appeared in 1906 (as pp. 66-332 of his "Peintre-Graveur Italien") but that edition is less than ideal, both because it is unillustrated and because of its many errors and omissions. In the late 1960s Phyllis Dearborn Massar performed the Herculean task of assembling photographs of the over 1,300 prints described, correcting De Vesme's mistakes, and supplying new information regarding unknown states and proofs. This two-volume edition is the result of her outstanding scholarship. Folio, bound in publisher's cloth. Tiny traces of wear to extremities of bindings, otherwise as new. The essential reference for anyone interested in Della Bella's prints.

Contents include 50 drawings, studies, and sketches from the hand of Renaissance master Andrea Palladio, including archways, basilicas, temples, baths, capitals, columns. Lionello Puppi is author of The complete works of Canaletto and Andrea Palladio and is an authority on visual arts of the Veneto region.

Covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows moderate wear with chipping at top spine, two very small tears and one 1" closed tear near spine. 244 illustrations, including 190 full page plates in full color, with descriptions/commentary at end of book. Plates are impressively large and from the collection of Italian paintings in the Leningrad Hermitage. Artists include Simone Martini, Campigli, Morandi, Guttuso, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Giorgione, Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese, Carracci, Tiepolo, Guardi, Canaletto, 307 pp.
This is a very good softcover copy in the original illustrated wrappers with just light wear. Almost completely clean inside (1 page has a few faint marks or notes, now inscrutable), light toning outside. Text in Italian. This catalog was prepared to accompany the large exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni at Rome in the spring of 1959. Text by Emilio Lavagnino and Antonio Santangelo. 2656 works in the exhibition. Checklist. Bibliography. Chronology (1700-1959). 9" high X 6" wide, 566 text pages + 80 black & white plates. Fold-out brochure from the exhibition, with the plan of the exhibition, which artists in which rooms, etc, laid in. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
