The Barnes Foundation is an American educational art and horticultural institution with locations in Merion Pennsylvania a suburb of Philadelphia; and Logan Square Philadelphia. It was founded in 1922 by Albert C. Barnes a chemist who collected art after making a fortune by co-developing an early anti-gonorrhea drug marketed as Argyrol and selling his company at the right time before antibiotics came into use. Today the foundation owns more than 2500 objects including 800 paintings estimated to be worth about $25 billion. These are primarily works by Impressionist and Modernist masters but the collection includes many other paintings by leading European and American artists as well as ancient works from other cultures. In the 1990s the foundation's declining finances led its leaders to various controversial moves including sending artworks on world tours and proposing to move the collection to Philadelphia. A 2009 documentary The Art of the Steal argued that the foundation had been taken over by other non-profit institutions. After numerous court challenges the new Barnes building opened on Benjamin Franklin Parkway on May 19 2012. The foundation's current president and executive director Thomas Thom Collins was appointed on January 7 2015. Wikipedia paperback

No jacket presumably as issued. 157 pages : color illustrations portraits ; 25 cm. On the occasion of the upcoming 90th birthday of Franz Gertsch MASI invites the artist to plan an exhibition devoted to his oeuvre. This has led to a remarkable and striking meeting between Gertsch's outstanding woodcuts and the wood engravings by two artists whom he regards as much more than simply pioneer revolutionaries of xylography Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch. Despite their historical distance and stylistic divergences these three artists display profound and unexpected affinities which extend far beyond the technique they share. --Museum website.

Chiefly illustrated./ Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at MASI-Museo d'arte della Svizzera Italiana Lugano Switzerland 12 May-22 September 2019./ Includes bibliographical references pages149-150. 2021202798Kobenhavn: Strandberg Publishing 2021. Hardcover. VG. A pale yellow matte hardcover book with the title printed in black down the spine. The free and pasted end pages are color-illustrated. Pages: 5 6-315 1. Profusely illustrated with color images. Text is in Danish. "The mystery and myths surrounding the artist Paul Gauguin 1848-1903 are alive and well. Hailed as one of early modernism's most significant figures but at the same time condemned for his work and his character. The book focuses on Gauguin's work and a legacy that remains ambiguous. The discussion about his art and person has not become less relevant at a time when #MeToo puts a new focus on Gauguin's relationship with underage girls and his part in colonialism in French Polynesia. Even so his paintings are still sold for astronomical sums and huge exhibitions characterize museums around the world Gauguin's status as a famous genius is undisputed. It is time to consider the champion and the monster as inseparable entities. With Flemming Friborg's fascinating book Gauguin's method and morality are seen as inextricably linked in a carefully nurtured personal brand. But modernity had great costs artistically and personally.". Strandberg Publishing hardcover
