Trevor J. Constable.†Laid in is a blank unsigned personal bank check from the account of William F. Rickenbacker the son of Edward V. Rickenbacker from the Bay Bank in Merrimack Valley Massachusetts. On the verso of the check is a typed note reading: “John C. Meyer p. 338 went on to become commanding general of SAC. He was commander of the base at Lockbourne Ohio when we rededicated it and named it Rickenbacker AFB in 1974. He sat next to EVR Edward V. Rickenbacker in 1944 I think it was or 1945 in Columbus at the world premiere of the movie ‘Captain Eddie’.†The reference to John C. Meyer is to a section at the end of Fighter Aces listing flying aces of World War II with a special additional note indicating that he was among the few pilots who also scored victories in the Korean War. The 1945 film Captain Eddie told the story of Rickenbacker’s life and aviation achievements and starred Fred MacMurray in the title role with Charles Bickford as William Rickenbacker. Illustrated. Near fine bright copy with a hint of edge wear in a very good slightly dust soiled dust jacket with a faint dampstain to the bottom edge of the rear panel barely affecting the cloth. Fighter Aces tells the story of the great military fliers who have gained the rank of ‘Ace’ by scoring five or more kills in air-to-air combat. Captain Eddie V. Signed by World War II Flying Aces Clarence D. "Lucky" Lester Johannes "Macky" Steinhoff Don Lopez and Geoffrey Page. Notable is the signature of Tuskegee Airman Lt. Clarence D. "Lucky" Lester who was assigned to the 100th Fighter Squadron a part of the 332nd Fighter Group who earned the nickname "Lucky" because of all the tight situations he escaped from in particular during an air battle in July 1944 where he downed three enemy planes within five minutes without any damage to his own aircraft. The other signers included Luftwaffe Fighter Ace General Johannes "Macky" Steinhoff who was amongst only a very few German pilots to remain operational throughout the entirety of World War II and was a big part of The Bitburg Controversy. Lt. Col. Donald S. Lopez would later help develop and serve as deputy director of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. British Wing Commander Alan Geoffrey Page founding member of the Guinea Pig Club social club and support group at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead Sussex and recipient of experimental facial reconstruction surgery after receiving burn injuries in his aircraft. DJ has some wear tears soiling and chips. Toliver joined the US ARMY AIR CORPS as a Flying Cadet in October 1937 and received his wings as a pilot in October 1938. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on October 6 1938. In March 1941 he went to Montreal Canada and joined the Canadian Pacific Railroad Air Service as a contract pilot flying Lockheed HUDSONS and Consolidated B-24s from Montreal to Gander New Foundland and on across the Atlantic Ocean to Prestwick and Ayr. Scotland. THE CPRRAS later became known as British Ministry of Aircraft Production and later as Atlantic Ferry Command and finally was known as RAFFerry Command. In March 1942 he returned to the USAAF on active duty. Here he had the opportunity to fly nearly 200 different types of aircraft. In 1951 Toliver began writing about the American Fighter Aces and his first book was published in 1965. Trevor James Constable 17 September 1925 31 March 2016 served 31 years at sea 26 of them as a radio officer in the U.S. merchant marine. He authored several books on the aerial warfare of World War II together with co-author Raymond Toliver. Constable was an author who produced 10 non-fiction books many well known to aficionados of famous fighter aces. His co-author on these works was Raymond Toliver a former U.S. Air Force pilot and official historian of the American Fighter Aces Association. Here is the saga of all the great aces from World War I to the Korean War - the men their planes the stories and the dogfights and the heroes who won and lost them.
