'Willy Lott's House is situated on the edge of the river Stour close to Flatford Mill; it is a principal object in many of Constable's pictures. Willy Lott a farmer was born and died in it having passed a life of more than eighty years without having spent four whole days away from it. The figure on horseback was sketched from Constable's father'. From 'English Landscape Scenery' 1855. John Constable RA was an English Romantic landscape painter. He believed that imagination and emotion were an important part of artistic expression and so incorporated these tenets into his lush idyllic scenes. The painter collaborated closely with the engraver David Lucas to create prints that would illustrate Constable's didactic intention—to illustrate the "chiaroscuro of nature."
