br. Cézanne è stato chiamato da Peter Handke "maestro dell'umanità", titolo che gli compete pienamente a partire dall'insegnamento che dalla sua opera ha saputo trarre uno dei massimi poeti del secolo, R.M. Rilke. Cézanne è entrato in Rilke "come una freccia fiammeggiante" accendendo in lui "un incendio di chiaroveggenza" che lo ha accompagnato per tutta la vita e gli ha rivelato il senso ultimo dell'opera d'arte: il compito dell'artista di fronte a se stesso e al mondo. Senza questo incontro Rilke non sarebbe diventato Rilke. Senza l'"insegnamento" di Cézanne il nostro secolo non avrebbe conosciuto nulla della poesia, o meglio del pensiero, che ha preso forma nelle Elegie duinesi e nei Sonetti a Orfeo.
