Un libro che scopre 22 guazzi inediti tra i 62 studi preparatori fatti da Marc Chagall per la Bibbia grafica dell' editore Ambroise Vollard (1930-1931). Gli studi e le gouaches, creati da Chagall all'inizio degli anni Trenta, sono i due cicli pittorici all'origine di tutta l'opera grafica dell'artista sulla Bibbia, un impegno che si concluderà solo dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale con le edizioni di Tériade. Se è esplicita la funzione preparatoria nei confronti delle acqueforti, il volume ravvisa anche l'aspetto anticipatorio del monumentale progetto del Messaggio Biblico, che darà vita al Musée National Marc Chagall di Nizza. Il suo impegno di pittore, attraverso le Figure della Bibbia, intende riportare nel mondo quello sguardo di Profezia, di cui denuncia l'assenza. Il volume contestualizza gli studi e le gouaches, opere di forte e autonoma rilevanza estetica, all'interno dell'itinerario artistico di Chagall con il contributo di Sylvie Forestier e ne mette in luce l'impegno storico-politico con il testo di Nathalie Hazan-Brunet; infine, Evgenia Kuzmina sviluppa una lettura iconografica che esplicita le fonti filosofiche e figurative dell'artista.

L'incontro di Marc Chagall con la vetrata avviene sotto il duplice segno della cattedrale di Chartres e di Padre Marie-Alain Couturier, promotore di una concezione dell'arte sacra rivoluzionaria. Proprio a Chartres, Chagall si appropria dei segreti formali e tecnici dell'arte delle vetrate. Tra gli anni cinquanta e gli anni ottanta, le città di Metz, Sarrebourg, Magonza, Reims, Nizza, Zurigo, Gerusalemme e New York saranno lo scenario di alcuni dei monumentali lavori su vetro dell'artista. Opere complesse, che appassionano l'artista, capace di coprire interi metri quadrati con armonie cromatiche dalla potenza narrativa e simbolica eccezionale. Fondamentale, nel processo di passaggio dalla maquette alla vetrata, la simbiosi con il maestro vetraio di Reims Charles Marq che, per poter riprodurre l'amplissima gamma cromatica voluta da Chagall, aveva ripreso la tecnica medievale della placcatura del vetro. Sui pezzi da lui composti, Chagall interveniva eliminando veli di colore, o aggiungendoli, tramite l'applicazione della grisaille, tecnica cisterciense che permetteva di ripassare intere campiture con l'acido, così da dare loro sfumature e matericità. Le maquette preparatorie offrono lo schema compositivo della singola vetrata; straordinari dettagli ne illustrano la grandiosità.

Text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind with huge full page, sometimes dual page prints throughout, at least 75 in number. Dust jacket shows light shelf wear only, no tears.
