Jewish Telegraphic Agency April 2 1985:"Marc Chagall the Russian born Jewish painter many of whose masterpieces were on Jewish themes was buried today at Saint Paul De Vence the village in the south of France where he lived and worked for the past 20 years. He died last Thursday at the age of 97.There were no religious rites. Chagall’s widow Valentina Brodsky said the artist had specifically requested that there be no religious service at his burial. A family member recited the Kaddish but without the required minyan.The funeral was attended by a handful of family members and close friends and by diplomats of three nations. Two representatives of the Soviet Embassy in Paris were present as were French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas Minister of Culture Jack Lang and Israel’s Ambassador to France Ovadia Soffer.". Il entretiendra des relations privilégiées avec des vedettes du cinéma et des artistes comme Armand ou César entre autres. Bref un parcours exemplaire au cours duquel il ne volera jamais une image et ne violera jamais l’intimité de ses « clients ». Tout l’inverse des paparazzis au sens où on l’entend aujourd’hui : « J’ai une façon de travailler dans le respect des personnes sans doute parce que j’ai été élevé ainsi. Certains de mes collègues se demandaient parfois comment j’arrivais à avoir certaines photos. C’était simplement parce que j’étais bien vu que je faisais mon boulot correctement. Et avec correction… Avoir une bonne réputation dans ce milieu-là ça compte ça ouvre des portes. Offered here is an original color lithograph from his portfolio "Bible Lithographs" published in Verve in 1956. The image was later pictured in the catalogue for the grand opening of the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice in 1973. Not long before Henri Matisse's death in 1954 Pablo Picasso remarked "When Matisse dies Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is." Marc Chagall 7 July 1887 – 28 March 1985 was one of the most celebrated and beloved artists of the 20th century. Born Marc Zakharovich Shagal in Vitebsk Belarus then part of the Russian Empire he trained in Saint Petersburg before moving to Paris in 1910 where he became part of the vibrant avant-garde of Montparnasse. Drawing on Jewish folk tradition Russian culture and the imagery of his Belarusian childhood Chagall developed a uniquely dreamlike visual language infused with lovers floating above villages fiddlers on rooftops animals angels and mystical biblical scenes. Associated with Fauvism Cubism and Surrealism—yet belonging to none—he was the quintessential 'School of Paris' master. His monumental stained-glass windows ceiling paintings including the Paris Opéra and tapestries brought his vision to public spaces worldwide.
