1926141411Paris: Au Sans Pareil 1926. Softcover. Fine. Limited Edition. 955pp. Octavo. Bound in the original wrappers with a stiff blue wrap around jacket with dark blue lettering on the front and spine. One of 60 limited copies printed on Vergé de Hollande-- numbered 56 to 115-- with an extra suite of the 5 etchings by Marc Chagall in the latter portion of the book; this copy is #110. Deckling to all text block edges. Illustrated with five full page etchings by Chagall throughout the text with duplicate copies of the plates bound at the end; all the etchings have the original tissue guards. The blue jacket has faded quite a bit and is more of a buff colour and has some water stains on the back panel and to the spine in spots. Some transfer from the inner folds of the jacket is apparent on the ffep although it is quite faint. Internally clean and an attractive copy overall. Limited to a printing of 960 copies in total with 60 of those on Vergé de Hollande of which this copy is one. In 1923 Marc Chagall moved to Paris and received several commissions for visual narratives including this story by Marcel Arland. The text is comprised of a short story told in reverse beginning with the death of a young girl's illegitimate baby and ending with the first night she and her lover spend together. The girl is vilified by her neighbors and Chagall's first image shows her being taken away by the police as a crowd yells and shames her. Another plate shows the girl giving birth alone in her backyard among the chickens and empty crates. Due to the popularity of Chagall's prints many copies of this book were split apart and the etchings were sold individually. This is a complete and clean copy. 1926 Au Sans Pareil paperback

A luminous evocation of Chagall's beloved France from one of the 20th century's greatest colorists. Marc Chagall 7 July 1887 28 March 1985 was one of the most celebrated and beloved artists of the 20th century. Born Marc Zakharovich Shagal in Vitebsk Belarus then part of the Russian Empire he trained in Saint Petersburg before moving to Paris in 1910 where he became part of the vibrant avant-garde of Montparnasse. Drawing on Jewish folk tradition Russian culture and the imagery of his Belarusian childhood Chagall developed a uniquely dreamlike visual language infused with lovers floating above villages fiddlers on rooftops animals angels and mystical biblical scenes. Associated with Fauvism Cubism and Surrealismyet belonging to nonehe was the quintessential 'School of Paris' master. His monumental stained-glass windows ceiling paintings including the Paris Opéra and tapestries brought his vision to public spaces worldwide. Beige cloth boards with illustration in black on the front cover black lettering on the spine. Illustrated endpapers. Original torn publisher's belly band laid in at the interior front cover. This unique copy contains two inscriptions to former president of Israel Zalman Shazar 1889-1974 in pen on the title page. One at the top is a 75th birthday gift inscription in Hebrew from a unidentified friend of Shazar and below it is another warm inscription from artist Marc Chagall in Yiddish dated 1964. Chagall writes: "In honor of the president and my good friend Z. Shazar with love Marc Chagall Jerusalem 1964". It can be assumed that Shazar's friend gave him the book as a gift and Marc Chagall who was present at the time also inscribed it to him.

This monograph showcases Marc Chagall's graphic work from the years 1922-1957 and includes a total of 148 images reproducing the artist's work. Most images are in b/w with six in color and can be divided roughly into five major stages of Chagall's career: etchings for his autobiography - illustrations for Gogol's "Dead Souls" 1923-27 - etchings for La Fontaine's "Fables" 1927-30 - illustrations for the Bible - his post-war lithographs. All images are finely printed mostly in high quality offset with a few b/w images being lithographic.

Dust jacket with some minor to light rubbing and creasing to extremities. Binding with very minor age toning along the bottom edge of the front cover. A few light stains to the top edge of the book block. Interior clean throughout with book block tight overall.
