Schwartzbard held Petliura responsible for the death of fifteen of his relatives murdered in pogroms during Petliura rule of the Ukrainian National Republic. The number of Jews murdered during the massive 1918–1921 pogroms in Ukraine is estimated to be between 35000 and 50000 and a large percent of the violent attacks were carried out by soldiers under Petliura’s command.
