ill., br. Pablo Picasso riservò grande interesse nei confronti della ceramica, che considerava un mezzo di espressione artistica alla stregua della scultura, della pittura, della grafica. A Vallauris, presso l'atelier ceramico di Madoura, egli si dedicò alla lavorazione dell'argilla per venticinque anni, dal 1946 al 1971, producendo migliaia di pezzi. Il volume indaga questo eccezionale capitolo dell'arte del grande maestro spagnolo attraverso cinquanta ceramiche provenienti dal Musée national Picasso-Paris - un nucleo di inestimabile valore, che rappresenta quasi la metà della grande collezione di ceramica del museo - poste in un dialogo con opere conservate al Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza, fonti dirette della sua ispirazione: la ceramica classica a figure rosse e nere, i buccheri etruschi, la ceramica popolare spagnola e italiana, il graffito italiano quattrocentesco ed esemplari di area mediterranea con iconografie di animali, senza dimenticare le terrecotte delle culture mesoamericane. Questa mostra si inserisce nel progetto "Picasso Mediterraneo", un evento culturale di respiro internazionale che si svolge tra il 2017 e il 2019. Il programma coinvolge oltre settanta istituzioni e comprende una serie di iniziative articolate intorno all'opera "ostinatamente mediterranea" di Pablo Picasso. L'itinerario tra i luoghi dell'arte picassiana, promosso dal Musée national Picasso-Paris, offre un'inedita esperienza culturale con l'obbiettivo di rafforzare i legami tra le diverse sponde del Mediterraneo.

Particolarmente fecondi, e anche ricchi di invenzioni, gli ultimissimi anni della sua produzione - una produzione di un uomo che l'età spinge a raddoppiare anziché a rallentare inducono a credere che, al contrario di quello che dice, è lui, Picasso, a fare adesso quello che vuole della pittura, e che dunque, tra lei e lui, è lui il più forte. Ma che cosa significa "fare quello che si vuole" di un'arte? Non è forse essere così abile da praticarla in tutta libertà, senza alla fine dover mettere i pollici negli occhi a quelle opacità che si interpongono come schermi tra quello che si è voluto realizzare e quello che di fatto si realizza? Se si giunge a infrangere tutte le resistenze che possono temporaneamente fermarvi, come non essere colti da vertigine quando, a causa di un muro che ancora si oppone, si ha sì l'opera dietro di sé, ma davanti nient'altro che un vuoto (che bisognerà affrettarsi a nascondere accingendosi a un'altra opera, che a sua volta lascerà sull'orlo del vuoto)?..."
