Au moment de leur rencontre durant l'hiver 1905-06, chacun d'entre eux se trouve engagé dans des recherches plastiques à l'origine des révolutions « fauve » et « cubiste ». Dès ce moment et tout au long de leur trajectoire, Matisse et Picasso ont vécu et travaillé, dans un vis à vis productif, à Paris, en Catalogne ou sur la Riviera française. Oscillant entre amitié et compétition, leur relation deviendra durant la seconde guerre mondiale, une véritable « fraternité artistique » selon les mots d'Henri Matisse. Les échanges et interférences stylistiques ou thématiques sont nombreux entre leurs œuvres respectifs, notamment avec les recherches cubisantes de Matisse en 1913-1917 ou l'évocation des Odalisques par Picasso à partir des années 30. L'exposition Matisse-Picasso, la première à confronter leurs œuvres pour la période 1906-1960, veut reconstituer les moments clefs de ce dialogue. Elle réunit ainsi, dans un parcours fondé sur la tension, plus de 160 chefs-d'oeuvre.
