The first monograph to consider the life and work of American ceramic artist Robert Turner 1913-2005 "one of the most important ceramic artists in the United States today. Distinguishing himself in the art pottery movement of the sixties Turner rose to prominence when he moved from functional pieces to sculptural forms and began to create a body of work notable for its dynamic yet serene forms. . Beautifully illustrated with pivotal works spanning the artist's distinguished career this book not only relates the compelling story of a young artist's journey toward formal mastery but furnishes essential documentation on one of the most intriguing periods of the American crafts movement. Artists collectors and students will find this volume inspirational and invaluable on many levels." dj. Kodansha International hardcover

Miro had long planned to illustrate a book by Desnos but the project was delayed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and subsequently the Second World War in which Desnos was an active member of the French Resistance. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and sent to several concentration camps including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Desnos survived the war only to die of typhoid a few weeks after the liberation of the camp where he was held.

Nearly thirty years later Desnos' widow approached Miro with the idea of illustrating his works again. In the end they settled on Pénalités de l'enfer ou les nouvelles Hébrides The Penalties of Hell or The New Hebrides Desnos' first work in prose written in Morocco in 1922.
Mourlot 959-90; Cramer 188. Bibliography. Also included is the CD issued by the publisher. From " Bibliographic Treasures and Medieval Maps": "This manuscript was illustrated in two different periods: 1 Canterbury c. 1200- 184 pages. It opens with what Leroquais called the Psalter prologue consisting of 8 extraordinary full-page miniatures and continues with 52 fascinating miniatures at the beginning of each Psalm. Most pages feature decorated initials. 2 Catalonia c. 1340: from page 185 onwards we find 46 miniatures framed by bright colours and divided into two or three bands each divided into two or three compartments. This section is characterised by the great iconographic freedom of the typological interpretation of both the Psalms and the New Testament prophecies. The architectural and plant details and motifs and the dress and colour range employed are very homogenous although certain stylistic variations indicate the participation of different artists from the same workshop. The part painted by Ferrer Bassa was in all likelihood commissioned by Peter the Ceremonious. Copy No. 335. Facsimile: Near Fine in the publisher's slipcase which has some small scratches and is stamped in gilt with the name Robert M. Wilson.
