Limited edition one of 25 copies reserved for collaborators this being numbered XXV from a total edition of 205 signed by Miró in pencil on colophon; folio 43 x 33 cm. pp. viii 133 xv 13 lithographs printed in colours by Miroprinted by Mourlot on Arches wove paper all loose as issued in the publisher's printed wrappers cream coloured chemise and matching slipcase slipcase a little stained; a very attractive copy.<br /> Rare surrealist illustrations by miro; a key text of the Theatre of the Absurd <br /><br />This portfolio illustrates the play 'Ubu Roi' by the French writer Alfred Jarry that premiered in 1896 and was part of the genre of the Theatre of the Absurd which thrilled the Surrealists and Dadaist. It was adopted not only by Miró but also by other artists such as Max Ernst or Man Ray. Miró chose to create thirteen large colourful double-page lithographs for his 1966 illustrations of the play employing imagery that is characteristically biomorphic and humorous in keeping with themes of the play. The prints however are vividly coloured and finished and are perhaps slightly more painterly than most of Miró's graphic work.<br /> Paris, Tériade, 1966. unknown

Stamp of photographer Daniel Frasnay on the verso of each photo.<br /> <br /> Paris-born photographer Daniel Frasnay began working as a freelance photojournalist in the early 1950s initially documenting the Parisian cabaret and nightlife scene of the period. Frasnay befriended many leading artists of the twentieth century over the course of his career and was best known for his 1969 book "The Artist's World" which featured portraits of 40 artists including Alexander Calder Marc Chagall Salvador Dali William de Kooning Rene Magritte and of course Joan Miro. Frasnay's work was the subject of a 2005 documentary "Daniel Frasnay le royaume et l'exil" directed by Philippe Jadot. <br /> <br /> 7 x 7 inches. About Near Fine. N.p. unknown
