ill., ril. Con una carriera lunga settant'anni, il catalano Joan Miró (1893-1983) fu un eclettico gigante dell'arte moderna. Dalla pittura alla scultura, dai libri d'arte ad arazzi e ceramiche, realizzò innumerevoli capolavori, aderendo di volta in volta a varie correnti, quali i Fauves, il surrealismo, il dadaismo, il realismo magico, il cubismo e l'astrattismo. L'impressionante corpus di opere realizzate mette in luce una costante evoluzione che mira a respingere qualsiasi tentativo di categorizzazione e l'approvazione della critica borghese: delineando al contempo i mondi onirici tipici dell'artista. Salito alla ribalta all'inizio degli anni Venti, Miro si dedicò inizialmente a sperimentazioni di stampo fauves e cubista per poi sviluppare il proprio stile peculiare basato su simboli e pittogrammi disposti in enigmatiche narrazioni visive con frequenti riferimenti alla vita catalana. Con l'avanzare della sua carriera, Miró si orientò verso il surrealismo e, pur non essendosi mai del tutto identificato con questa corrente, divenne noto come uno dei suoi esponenti più celebrati in virtù del ricorso a tecniche quali il disegno automatico, l'astrazione lirica e la pittura a campi di colore. In seguito diversificò ulteriormente i propri mezzi espressivi, lavorando con ceramiche, tessili e arrivando a proporre sculture fatte di gas. Con i suoi colori vividi, le fantasie oniriche e i simboli enigmatici, questo libro riunisce i numerosi filoni dell'opera caleidoscopica di Miró.
