19721205621972. MATISSE Henri. Poesies Antillaises. By John-Antoine Nau. 90 ff. Illustrated with 28 full-page portrait lithographs and a further 27 hors-texte ornaments by Matisse. Folio 383 x 292 mm loose as issued in the publisher's wrappers and cardboard slipcase. Paris: Mourlot 1972. Matisse conceived of this work as an homage to his close friend John-Antoine Nau and as he had done with Charles d'Orleans and Ronsard he personally selected the poems that moved him most. As Matisse and the poet shared a common love for Martinique Matisse worked from Martiniquan models as well as Malagashan models for the illustrations. Matisse prepared the illustrations for this book in 1946 and a contract to publish the edition was drawn up with Mourlot in 1947. Matisse worked on and off on the production maquette for Poesies Antillaises from 1950 to 1953. However due in large measure to the artist's ill health at the end of his life publication was delayed until almost twenty years after his death. One of 200 regular copies. A superb copy of this magnificent book which is similar in feel to Florilège published by Skira in 1948. Duthuit Henri Matisse Les Ouvrages Illustrés No. 37. From Manet to Hockney No. 129. unknown books
1920101632Paris: Les Soins de l'Artiste 1920. First edition of Matisse's classic self-produced suite of 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of his drawings of women. Quarto original wrappers as issued with an original frontispiece etching of a woman's face. One of only 1000 copies produced this is number 908. Signed by Matisse below the original frontispiece etching "Henri Matisse." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and in the original jacket. Matisse himself edited and printed this exquisite suite of 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of his drawings of women to accompany a 1920 exhibition of his work. "Daily painting sessions alternated with hours on end devoted to drawing a corrective Matisse would use from now on whenever he felt his work was in danger of losing its balance between color and feeling on the one hand and line and form on the other. He returned over and over again to a lace collar drawing it first in minute detail until he had got it by heart and could translated it at will with two swift lines 'into an ornament an arabesque without losing the character of lace and of that particular lace'. Matisse was evolving methods he would use for the rest of his life. He published fifty of these drawings in a portfolio called Cinquante Dessins to coincide with his exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. A surge of renewed energy pulses between the lines of the letters he wrote home as he drew them" Spurling 225-26. Les Soins de l'Artiste unknown books

14600Eminent French painter. Matisse ranks among the greatest artists of the 20th century. Scarce handwritten letter entirely in Matisse's hand 1 page dated November 2 1949 in French. At this time in his life Matisse said that all he could do was work he dreaded the daily confrontation with form and color on the canvas and could not face it without the consoling human presence of the pretty young girls he paid to pose for him. "That's what keeps me there surrounded by my fruit and flowers which I get to grips with little by little almost without noticing . . . and then I wait for the thunderbolt that is bound to follow."The young women who posed for him all learned to live and work in the atmosphere of almost unbearable tension generated by Matisse's effort to express his emotions on canvas-an effort that drained all his strength. He felt the same tension as when asked to pose himself.

Matisse writes: "Dear Friend I am quite upset about having to write to you that I am too nervous to be able to pose. It is something that has always been painful for me. I have never been able to pose even for Marquet 50 years ago. Please believe dear friend in my regrets and in my best wishes. H. Matisse 2 nov 49 ". Matisse and Albert Marquet were among the foremost painters in the Fauvist movement. They met at and both attended the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs one of the most prestigious French Universities of art and design. Matisse and Marquet were roommates for a time and they influenced each other's work.

Wonderful associations between the two luminaries with interesting insight in Matisse's private nature and the great painter's own nervousness at being the subject and posing.
