1952132731Paris: Raisons d'Être 1952. Matisse and Rouveyre's homage to Apollinaire First edition thus first printing number 233 of 300 on vélin d'arches from a total edition of 350 with the chemise and slipcase in unusually nice condition. The friendship between the caricaturist and writer André Rouveyre 1879-1962 and the artist Henri Matisse 1869-1954 left a trail of art works and a correspondence of over 1100 letters. They met at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Paris in 1898. After losing touch for a while the two friends later reunited and exchanged daily correspondence as they both lived in the South of France where they had fled the World Wars. The present work is an homage to their mutual friend the writer and poet Guillaume Apollinaire 1880-1918 who famously coined the term "calligram" being a contraction of "calligraphy" and "ideogram" that is text written in a shape related to its contents rather than linearly. Folio. Aquatint frontispiece 6 full page and 1 smaller lithographic portraits decorative initials wrappers and chemise by Henri Matisse. Original illustrated wrappers gatherings loose as issued. With the glassine. Housed in publisher's chemise and blue slipcase. Wrappers lightly toned faint offsetting chemise boards a little bowed and rubbed some wear to slipcase extremities rubbed head and foot of fore edge just starting a very good copy indeed. hardcover

I have written asking the Notary to replace one of the beds of the villa behind with an iron one . . . and to get rid of the sofa in the workshop which like the bed has bedbugs. See to it that he responds. I would have liked to have gone to see you to tell you all this but I haven't had time today and I believe the situation is pressing. <br /> In Friendship and all the best<br /> H. Matisse<br /> 1/03/1909"<br /> <br /> Matisse was a French artist known for his use of colour & his fluid brilliant & original draughtsmanship. As a printmaker & sculptor but principally as a painter Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve wild beast by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.1 His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
