18632935Cali: 26 de Mayo 1863. Very good. Small broadside 8 x 5.75 inches. Scattered foxing; light toning. This broadside announces the exile of the Franciscans from Cali and the Republic of Colombia for their failure to comply with new laws concerning taxes on religious orders. Interestingly this is signed by the Guardian of the Franciscans himself Rafael Ortiz who urges the citizens of Cali to pray for the order and to fend for themselves under a vain perfidious and deceitful government. 18765735Chalchuapa El Salvador 1876. Still very good. 3pp. on a bifolium. Folio. Crinkling and minor wear at edges. Faint dampstain to upper right corner. The president of Guatemala Justo Rufino Barrios invaded El Salvador in 1876 following the presidential election there. Barrios suspected that both the elected and former presidents had been harboring Guatemalan opponents to his regime and hope to install someone more favorable. The present "political plan" for El Salvador reads more as an indictment of the two leaders Santiago Gonzalez and Andres del Valle than an as organizing document for a new government. The first signer here is Rafael Zaldivar the choice of Barrios for next president of El Salvador and the work was printed in the field at Chalchuapa on April 10 1876 approximately one week before the decisive battles that forced the capitulation of the Salvadoran government. 18532760Chiquimila: 2 Agosto 1853. Very good plus. Small broadside approximately 8.25 x 6.5 inches. Trimmed a bit raggedly. Small wormhole at lower left affecting one letter. Light tanning. An otherwise unrecorded 1853 broadside in which Rafael Carrera addresses the army and people of Guatemala concerning the ongoing strife with Honduras. He writes in part:

"Sé bien que los pueblos de Honduras son nuestros hermanos y siempre habiamos vivido con ellos en la mejor armonia; mas ahora ¿por qué sufren que se les constituya en instrumentos y se les haga victimas de las pasiones inconsideradas de unos pocos revolucionario Habitantes todos de la Republica.-- Vuestros sacrificios en favor de la paz no seràn infructuosos; y yo espero mediante el auxilio de la Divina Providencia que no durarán mas tiempo."

Not in OCLC. 2 Agosto unknown
18552763Guatemala 1855. Fair. 3pp. on a bifolium. Small folio. Leaves no longer integral. Heavy chipping and wear at edges quarter-sized hole through upper center of both leaves but only a small amount of text actually affected. Moderate tanning and soiling. A scarce 1855 broadside in which Guatemalan caudillo Rafael Carrera addresses Hondurans regarding the perceived malign intentions of their president José Trinidad Cabañas. Honduras with Cabañas at the helm had been in conflict with Guatemala since 1853 and it was Cabañas' stated goal to reunite the states of the defunct Federal Republic of Central America to which end he also invaded Nicaragua in 1854. In this address Carrera states the need to invade Honduras in order to halt the aggressions of Cabañas reiterates his desire for peace and friendship with "true" Hondurans and promises his assistance in reestablishing a reasonable government in their country. It reads in part:

A somewhat tattered copy but not in OCLC. unknown
1879LL1
Portugal's First Great Political Satirical Magazine a Complete Set

Includes Portuguese Poetry

6vols; small folio; 315 issues COMPLETE. Contemporary half leather bindings red brown and green.2 color title pages and two chromolithographic cartoons; three full-page chromolithographic caricatures; black and white lithographs throughout.

O António Maria was Portugal's first great political satire magazine directed by Portugal's first great political cartoonist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro 1846-1905.

The title meant as an exclamation expropriated the first half of the name of the reigning Portuguese Prime Minister António Maria Fontes Pereira.

Like Puck O António Maria usually devoted its first last and center pages to cartoons. The text pages also were dotted with cartoon art. Among the contributors were the poet Guilherme de Azevedo "João Rialto" Ramalho Ortigão "João Ribaixo" Alfredo Morais Pinto "Pan-Tarantula" João Broa Emílio Pimentel Enrique Casanova António Ramalho Ribeiro Cristino Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro Manuel Gustavo and others. Initially the magazine struck a balance between cartoons and text but as it matured the text took a subservient position to cartoons and comic strips.

Pinheiro used satire and irony in the pages of his magazine to oppose those in power and denounce the selfishness and corruption of the elites. All of Portugal's leading politicians and heads of first families appeared in caricature at one time or another in the weekly In 1884 the government revised the criminal code which seriously limited freedom of the press. It was in this repressive environment against which journalists generally adopted a passive attitude that led Pinheiro in his final issue to explain: "When in a meeting of journalists' I proposed an 18-day publishing moratorium to protest the shameful situation in which the Portuguese government has placed the Portuguese press it was pointed out that O António Maria as a weekly sheet would not be seriously affected by the resolution. So I take the execution of my proposal one step further: O António Maria closes its doors forever in a sign of mourning."

#WorldCat: 2 copies in US Libraries.
