Puerto Rico 1911-1980 considered the most important exponent of muralism in Puerto Rico although an artist of wide spectrum. The edition includes various essays by expert scholars who analyze the life and artwork of the artist from a social anthropological historical and philosophical perspective. Rios Rey started his artistic career in 1939 and with government support he traveled to Mexico during the 1960s where he studied the Mexican muralists and was strongly impressed by the narrative quality of the mural. Back in the country he painted historic representations in numerous public buildings as part of the Government program to embellish public structures. The book includes biographic studies on the foreign artists who came to Puerto Rico in the 1940s as part of the program PRRA like: Arnaldo Maas Fray Marcolino Rufino Tamayo Rafael Tufiño José Antonio Maduro Quén and others and a glossary of mural painting related terms.
