Bindings shaken hinges cracked most of the backstrip of Vol. I is missing both volumes appear to have been rebacked long ago with the original spines laid down corners and edges well rubbed. The plates are toned but only in the margins. The dedication pages are dated 1847. The title pages are not dated and include the statement 'New Edition'. The imprint at the bottom of the title pages has been covered with a pastedown of the Batsford imprint which is heavily foxed. These are large and heavy; regular shipping charges will not apply. Raphael from renowned Victorian artists and illustrators Reginald Cleaver; George Percy Jacomb-Hood; Henrietta Rae Normand; Claude Hayes; and William Quiller Orchardson.<br /> <br /> Marianna Mary Florette Moses Raphael 1861-1942 studied art in her youth but did not pursue it professionally until her husband the wealthy Arthur Lewis Raphael died suddenly in 1891. Widowed at 30 Mary was left to care for their daughter Gladys and enrolled at Cooke's Studio on Fitzroy Street. Her talent was recognized shortly after her enrollment and her works including "The Wood Nymph" and "Britomart and Amoret" had appeared in galleries throughout the 1890s. Britomart clearly suggests desire between two women In the early 1900s Raphael continued to exhibit designed cover art for books became active in the suffrage movement and was a prolific short story writer. Jacomb-Hood 1857 -1929 was a painter and illustrator. He was a founding member of the New English Art Club and Society of Portrait Painters. I should not like to hang it badly but if we are crowded it might have to go higher than I should like to see it." Henrietta Rae Normand 1859-1928 was a painter skilled in classical and literary subjects. The exhibit to which Normand may be referring is the Jubilee of Queen Victoria an 1897 exhibition of work by female artists.<br /> <br /> 4. ALS. Claude Hayes. Nov. 17th.n.d. but ca. 1896. Se inició en el periodismo en <em>El Contemporáneo</em> y en <em>La Discusión</em>. En la <em>Revista Hispanoamericana</em> 1864-1867 pronto propuso la autonomía de Cuba. Fue gran activista de la <em>Sociedad Abolicionista Española</em> fundada en 1865 siendo presidente del Comité ejecutivo desde 1868 a 1876 en que ocupó la Presidencia de la Sociedadque se disolvió en 1888 una vez erradicada la esclavitud de las naciones hispánicas. Su antiesclavismo le granjeó grandes enemistades en Cuba asegurando Miguel Moya Oradores políticos que un periódico integrista cubano abrió suscripción para premiar a quien lograse aniquilarle: "Por sacarle los ojos 100. Por partirle el corazón de una puñalada 500. Por arrastrarle 1.000 pesos.".En 1871 fue elegido diputado en Cortes por Infiesto Asturias sin pertenecer a ningún partido político. Important account of the Portuguese war with the Dutch in Brazil from 1624-1654 and the part played by Joao Fernandes Vieira 1613-1681 which resulted in the expulsion of the Dutch. Originally published in 1679 this second edition with significantly altered text was published in French German and Portuguese. This scarce copy is in Portuguese. The author based this work "principally on a manuscript the Historia da Guerra de Pernambuco e feitos memoraveis do mestre de campo Joo Fernandes Vieira. by Diogo Lopes Santiago." Moraes Ownership names and a gift inscription on ffep and blank leaf at front no marks in text. Insect damage to gutter of approximately 70 pages at rear not affecting any text. Espinosa 2013 Contribucion Arango’s most important work is an extensive catalog of autochthonous mollusks that collects the classification of this group of families genera and species with their scientific names and also the synonymy the habitat and region of the country where they are located.<br /> <p><br /> During the 17th–18th centuries only a few Cuban species of the mollusk fauna were discovered and all of them were erroneously attributed to Italy and China.
