British Museum London from 26 September 1997 to 4 January 1998 . Berkeley Art Museum University of California: 28 January - 19 April 1998 National Gallery of Canada Ottawa: 18 June - 23 August 1998 Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery Columbia University New York: 15 September - 21 November 1998 ; "The reputation of William Hogarth 1697-1764 rests largely on his pictorial stories a series of engravings that he called "modern Moral Subjects" the most famous being the Harlot's and the Rake's Progress. In this catalog David Bindman works backward from Hogarth's reputation today--where he is seen by some as a conservative populist and by others as a political radical--and examines his impact on various artists over the past three centuries. Bindman also sets Hogarth's prints firmly in their historical context discussing the artist's public and the different influences on his work from Roman satire to the politics of the day. The result is an engaging and insightful portrayal not only of William Hogarth but also of the middle years of the eighteenth century. Art lovers will enjoy this book but so too will anyone with an interest in the literature and history of the mid-eighteenth century. 199988973Baltimore MD: The Baltimore Sun 1999. Presumed First Edition First printing. Trade paperback. Good. xii 324 pages. Author's Acknowledgments. The book is a little warped. There is also some wear tear and creasing around the edges and corners of the cover. The spine is also somewhat worn. There is an author sentiment that reads "Artscape Bethesda for Tim all my best Rafael". Introduction by David Simon. Rafael Alvarez born May 24 1958 is an American author based in Baltimore and Los Angeles. Alvarez went to work for the Sunpapers of Baltimore as a teenager—first in the circulation department and then the horse racing desk in sports—before landing on the City Desk as a utility man and neighborhood folklorist. He was with The Sun from 1977 through 2001. After leaving the paper Alvarez worked on ships as a laborer before joining the staff of the HBO drama The Wire. He also worked on the NBC crime dramas Life and The Black Donnellys. Among his many books are two short story collections—The Fountain of Highlandtown and Orlo & Leini; a history of the Archdiocese of Baltimore; two anthologies of journalism—Hometown Boy and Storyteller; and The Tuerk House a history of Baltimore's pioneering drug and alcohol treatment center for the poor. In 2010 he was nominated for an Edgar Award for The Wire: Truth Be Told an encyclopedic companion to the television series. Get familiar with Canton's Chitter Chatter ladies . Trace Frank Zappa's Baltimore Origins . Go on patrol for hoodles. Take an intimate look at the quirky lifestyles of Baltimore with Rafael Alvarez's Hometown Boy: The Hoodle Patrol and Other Curiosities of Baltimore. This collection of stories "makes the argument that on any given afternoon more truth can be captured in a Morrell Park kitchen than in any great nerve-center of post-industrial society." Homicide author David Simon said of Rafael Alvarez's work "Throw down a coddie a beer and a chocolate-top cookie for dessert and discover that there are moments when some of the verbiage in the hometown rag actually sits upright and behaves like literature."
