925Peale is likely writing to John Durand 1822-1908 painter and son of artist Asher B. Durand. John Durand co-founded a cultural and art periodical called "The Crayon" published from Jan 3 1855 to July 1861. Peale writes "After you left me this morning it occurred to me that possibly in your next number you would give a few words on the Exhibition here - In this case you might say that it contained nothing from my pencil & that I preferred to send a portrait my last work in my 80th Year to the New York Academy. which I have done - That of a Young Man." Nicely signed "Rembrandt Peale." The painting's title refers to his "Portrait of a Young Man." Peale had settled in Philadelphia by the time he wrote this letter and that city is likely the place to which he refers regarding the Exhibition. Earlier in the year of our letter 1857 Peale made prints that he called "Monochrome of Washington."

When he lectured at the New York Historical Society on June 16 he displayed Washington portraits including a Monochrome decorated with cord and tassel. see journals at Penn State Univ. on line Peale painted his first portrait at the age of 17 of President George Washington in 1795. Over the course of his long and prolific career as portrait painter Peale would paint over 70 pictures of Washington portraits of President Thomas Jefferson as well as Chief Justice John Marshall. In addition to painting the Founding Fathers Peale created many portraits including the one referenced in our letter. Letters of Peale mentioning one of his works are particularly uncommon. Matted with bust length albumen print of the artist attached to a mat possibly not the original mat. Corners of the print are somewhat damaged image is somewhat faded. The portrait print of the artist matches the tone of Peale's letter and creates a handsome pairing. unknown books
1859WRCAM45229New York: Colton 1859. Chromolithographic print: 20 x 30 inches. Receipt: 3 x 7 1/2 inches. Minor toning and soiling small tear at bottom edge. Very good. Large print of Rembrandt Peale's famous painting "The Court of Death" lithographed by Sarony Major & Knapp. Rembrandt Peale was the most accomplished son of the great American portrait painter Charles Willson Peale. The painting "The Court of Death" was the most ambitious of his works full 24 by 13 feet in size. Completed in 1820 it was displayed for a number of years at the Baltimore Peale Museum and then toured to other cities up through the time of the Civil War.

By 1859 the painting had been sold to Gardiner Quincy Colton who published it in the present format and sold the prints for the low price of $1. Noted scholar Peter C. Marzio wrote: "Peale himself normally haughty and querulous provided a model of understated endorsement of the lithograph writing shortly before his death to Tristram Coffin on July 3 1860 'The drawing is correct and the Colouring considering the difficulty of the process & its cheapness gives a good general idea of the painting.'" Marzio further adds that this lithograph is among his favorites due to its importance in Peale's brilliant career not only as an artist but as a popularizer of art noting: "The painting is historically important as a very popular touring picture."

This example is accompanied by a printed and illustrated receipt for the purchase of one print. The receipt "entitles the holder to an ownership of One Share in the original Painting valued at $25000; which will be disposed of as soon as 100000 Engravings are taken in such manner as they the associated owners shall determine." The receipt has a portrait of Peale on one end and of George Washington on the other. In a contemporary prospectus for the print the publisher touts the obvious truth that more profit could be made by selling 100000 prints at the low price of $1 than could be achieved by selling 5000 prints at $5. In addition to increasing his profit margins Colton clearly hoped to sell more prints based on the idea of buying into a share of the painting.

A pair of items illustrating the distinct link between art and commerce. 1904199442London: Methuen & Co. 1904. First edition of Sharp's biography of Dutch master painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Octavo elegantly bound by Riviere and Son in full morocco in a Cosway-style binding with a hand painted miniature ivorene portrait of Rembrandt under glass to the front panel within an elaborate gilt botanical vignette gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands double gilt ruling to the front and rear panel gilt-ruled turn-ins and inner dentelles all edges gilt illustrated with forty engravings including tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Rembrandt. In near fine condition. Dutch master painter Rembrandt van Rijn is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art. Unlike most Dutch masters of the 17th century Rembrandt's works depict a wide range of style and subject matter from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes genre scenes allegorical and historical scenes and biblical and mythological themes as well as animal studies. Rembrandt's portraits of his contemporaries self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible are regarded as his greatest creative triumphs. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate autobiography in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity. Cosway bindings named for renowned 19th-century English miniaturist Richard Cosway were popularized if not invented in the early 1900s by the renowned London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran. The earliest Cosway bindings were created by Miss C.B. Currie who faithfully imitated Cosway's detailed watercolor style of portraiture from designs by J.H. Stonehouse Sotheran's manager. These delicate miniature paintings often on ivory were set into the covers or doublures of richly-tooled bindings and protected by a thin pane of glass. Methuen & Co. unknown books

122965Rembrandt inventor et feecit sic: 1633. Large 4to 255 x 207 mm. A fine impression with ample margins outside the plate mark on paper with a foolscap watermark. Archivally framed. § A fine impression of one of only two etchings in which Rembrandt reproduced his own paintings the other is Christ Before Pilate. This etching depicts the final scene in the parable of The Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37 in which the Samaritan stopped to help a traveler who had been attacked by robbers. Here he has brought the wounded man on horseback to an inn and pays for the man’s care and lodging. The Good Samaritan repeats with a number of variations the composition of his painting in the Wallace Collection London. Among Rembrandt’s additions here to the largely empty foreground that appeared in the painting is the defecating dog that adds a strange note of everyday reality to the biblical scene.
