br. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn è uno degli artisti più amati di tutti i tempi e il suo mito, cresciuto fra Ottocento e Novecento, di fatto non è mai tramontato. Il libro ricostruisce in modo approfondito, e aggiornato sulla base della più recente bibliografia, la sua lunga attività e, attraverso un'analisi ravvicinata delle opere - dipinti, incisioni e disegni -, fa emergere tutta l'originalità di questo grande pittore. Rembrandt ha saputo dar vita a un linguaggio artistico straordinario, in cui il dialogo con la grande tradizione del Rinascimento - soprattutto italiano, ma non solo - si unisce a una nuova sensibilità per l'osservazione della natura. Geniale sperimentatore, sempre alla ricerca di soluzioni tecniche originali, ha creato capolavori universali, come la Ronda di notte, la Danae e i molti autoritratti. Il volume segue la carriera dell'artista dal periodo giovanile a Leida, attraverso i "ruggenti" anni Trenta ad Amsterdam, sino alle vicende della cosiddetta bancarotta del 1656, offrendo un'immagine di Rembrandt in parte nuova e, forse, anche inaspettata.

Rembrandt Hermenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) è un pittore che affascina per un'infinità di motivi; quello che è curioso è l'insistenza con la quale ritorna al tema dell'autoritratto che costituisce un'attività costante: dall'età di 20 anni fino alla sua morte all'età di 63 anni, il pittore ritrae il proprio viso quasi un centinaio di volte. Quella dell'autoritratto è una storia lunga oltre quattro secoli, dalla primitiva attenzione all'animo umano, allo studio dell'inconscio, fino ad invadere il nostro mondo quotidiano (si pensi all'ormai celeberrimo selfie). Ma che cosa ha spinto - e tutt'ora spinge - l'uomo a duplicare la sua immagine? Narcisismo? Egocentrismo? Vanità? Affermazione di sé? Il volume, dopo una breve introduzione sulla pittura olandese del Seicento, offre un'esposizione della vita e dell'opera dell'artista di Leida, trattando anche gli importanti avvenimenti storici che hanno coinciso con la fase formativa di Rembrandt, anni che vedono il formarsi di una nuova struttura della bottega pittorica, di un diverso tipo di committenza e un differente rapporto con il circuito artistico.
