Author emigrated from France and served in the United States Army as assistant topographical engineer from 1817 to 1829 when he was promoted to topographical engineer. He resigned from the army in 1832. Poussin returned to France and served as French minister to the United States from 1848 to 1849. A marvelous and scarce document with only five copies recorded on OCLC. Whil it mentions the existance of a map Rink cites in Technica Americana that no map was issued. The cover letter printed after the title leaf is by Secretar of War John Barbour and cites the plan to build a national road from Washington to New Orleans across the Cumberland Mountains as authorized by Congress according to House of Representatives bill number 44 "to regulate th laying out and making a National Road from the City of Washington in the District of Columbia to New Orleans in the State of Louisiana." The ten folding tables give detailed information on the geographical formations natu of soils distances products bridges gradations counties population and distances along the route. New front free endpaper of the later binding also lacking. Some foxing. Priced accordingly. unknown books
