Il volume è il catalogo della mostra omonima allestita a Genova presso il Palazzo Ducale dal 6 ottobre 2022 al 22 gennaio 2023, una straordinaria esposizione per raccontare la grandezza del massimo pittore barocco di sempre: Peter Paul Rubens e il suo rapporto con la città. Il progetto nasce in occasione del quarto centenario della pubblicazione ad Anversa del celebre volume di Rubens Palazzi di Genova (1622). Rubens soggiornò in diverse occasioni a Genova tra il 1600 e il 1607 ed ebbe così modo di intrattenere rapporti diretti - e in alcuni casi molto stretti - con i più ricchi e influenti aristocratici della città. In mostra e nel catalogo sono presentate più di 150 opere, tra le quali hanno il ruolo di protagonisti oltre venti Rubens provenienti da musei e collezioni europee e italiane (con alcuni 'rientri' molto significativi), che si sommano a quelli presenti in città, giungendo così a un numero come non vi era dalla fine del Settecento a Genova; da quando, cioè, la crisi dell'aristocrazia con i contraccolpi della Rivoluzione Francese diede avvio a un'inesorabile diaspora di capolavori verso le collezioni del mondo. A partire dal nucleo rubensiano, il racconto del contesto culturale e artistico della città nell'epoca del suo maggiore splendore viene completato da dipinti degli autori che Rubens per certo vide e studiò (Tintoretto e Luca Cambiaso); che incontrò in Italia e in particolare a Genova durante il suo soggiorno (Frans Pourbus il Giovane, Sofonisba Anguissola e Bernardo Castello), o con cui collaborò (Jan Wildens e Frans Snyders). Disegni, incisioni, arazzi, arredi, volumi antichi, perfino abiti, accessori femminili e gioielli consentono di celebrare la grandiosità di una capitale artistica visitata da uno dei maggiori artisti di tutti i tempi e confermano quell'appellativo di Superba che fu dato a Genova. Il catalogo è riccamente illustrato e dà conto del lungo percorso di studi e approfondimenti scientifici da parte dei curatori e i saggi tematici vedono i contributi di un consistente numero di studiosi internazionali. La guida alla mostra e la guida alla Genova di Rubens, un affascinate itinerario cittadino sulle tracce dei capolavori di Rubens, completano la proposta per i visitatori e gli appassionati.
