A very good book with only slight fading to the edges and bumping to the base of the spine. Clean internally with some spotting to the top of the text block. Small name to the front endpaper. In a very good unclipped wrapper with slight chipping to the spine tips edges and corners. Small vertical crease to the front flap. Norman the clever one from a close knit Jewish family in London at the age of 41 finds himself as a drug addict and confined along with his paranoia and hallucinations. Volume I consists of drawings from the artist's childhood in Antwerp, circa 1590, through to the end of his sojourn in Italy, in October 1608. For the first time, Rubens's copies and their models are fully integrated into the rest of his graphic oeuvre, thus showing copies and original compositions created at the same time side by side. The volume contains 204 entries, including several sheets with drawings on recto and verso. Each entry consists of a detailed physical description of the drawing, provenance, exhibition history, full bibliography and a critical, interpretive discussion. Prefaced by an essay on the history of Rubens scholarship from 1892 to 2019.
