ill., ril. Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) è il massimo pittore fiammingo del suo tempo. Nato in Germania si trasferisce giovanissimo con la famiglia ad Anversa, dove passa dal protestantesimo al cattolicesimo. Nel 1600 compie un viaggio in Italia, dove rimane otto anni tra Mantova, Venezia, Roma e Genova. La sua formazione classica si indirizza verso lo stile che contribuisce a formare, il Barocco. Diviene il prototipo dell'artista ricco e famoso, colto e ben introdotto nelle corti di tutta Europa. Il suo stile elegante, solenne e teatrale, capace di tenere insieme naturalismo e piacevolezza decorativa detterà le regole della pittura per l'intero secolo XVII.
