011606various: various 0. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Tay Garnett 1894-1977 was one of the great American film directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. His six-decade career spanned silents for Mack Sennett Hal Roach and Pathé to major studio blockbusters like China Seas 1935 Mrs. Parkington 1944 A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court 1949 and the MGM film noir masterpiece The Postman Always Rings Twice 1946. At the end of his career he set out compiling views on directing from the greatest in the American film industry and international cinema. This collection of correspondence and books was assembled by him in the course of research. His book "Directing: Learn from the Masters" Scarecrow Press 1996 published posthumously ultimately presented the views of 43 of the world's greatest directors. In the mid 1970s Garnett sent a questionnaire of 21 key questions about the specifics of film directing and their careers to directors around the world. The correspondence dated between 1974 and 1977 consists of the following: 1 page TLS from ELIA KAZAN; 5 page TLS from ELIA KAZAN responding to the questionnaire in detail; TLS from director Leopoldo Torre Nilson; 1 page TLS from LOUIS MALLE; 1 page TLS from ALAIN RESNAIS; 1 page TLS from BRYAN FORBES; 2 page TLS with handwritten annotations from DINO RISI; 1 page ANS from ALLAN DWAN; four 1-page TLSs from FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT who authored the preface to Garnett's book; two 1 page TLSs from RENE CLAIR; 2 page TLS from FRED ZINNEMAN; 1 page ANS from Mary Walsh wife of RAOUL WALSH; five 1 page ALSs and one 2 page ALS from ALBERTO LATTUADA who advises the best address for Fellini ".in the middle of work on 'Casanova'.". Also included are carbon copies of Garnett's letter requesting participation in the project to Clair Truffaut Lattauda Stanley Kubrik Luchino Visconti Franco Zefferelli Claude Lelouche and business letters to prospective publishers. The books consist of 17 titles by or about 14 directors each inscribed by the director to the Garnett. In 1968 French culture minister Andre Malraux attempted to stop funding for the Cinematheque which would ostensibly have ousted Langlois thus igniting a series of heated protests. Renowned directors and film fans worldwide expressed their support of the institution including Renoir Godard Rouch and Daquin as seen here. Renoir writes to his friend the banker Charles Ephrussi a Russian-French critic art historian art collector and an early supporter of Impressionism. The letter is undated but most likely from the period when Renoir was actively selling to Ephrussi around the early or mid 1880s. He has been identified as the man in a top hat standing with his back to us in Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party 1881. Versailles where Renoir writes this letter would later also become the subject of his paintings.<br/><br/>Renoir writes in his hand:<br/>"My dear friend Impossible for me to have lunch. I'm at Versailles but as I know that you do not go until tonight I would like to shake your hand before your departure. I will come between 5 and 6:30. Friendship and an have excellent trip. A. Full green Morocco leather binding by Giulio Giannini of Firenze Florence with an inlaid red leather spine label; protected in custom-fitted archival mylar. There is minor shelfwear including a number of tiny scuffs. Number 3 of a limited edition of 45 copies signed by Lionello Venturi with an original etching by Renoir tipped-in. The etching which is unsigned is titled "Baigneuse debout a mi-jambes" and was printed in 1910 or shortly thereafter. It is in excellent condition as one might expect being protected inside a book. There is only the first state of this etching Delteil 23. There are at least three distinct impression categories depending upon when and the order in which they were printed. This impression is an early one but not among the earliest with a very good plate tone and maintaining very good detail in the dark areas. Later impressions lose detail and allow much more ink on the paper. The limitation page reads "Tiratura limitata a 45 esemplari numerati oltre a cinque fuori commercio. Copia No 3. L'incisione allegata a ogni copia e originale di Auguste Renoir." Previous owner's gift inscription on the front endpaper that of Boston teacher and poet Antonio Alfredo Giarroputo.
