Théodore Duret paints here the great history of the movement he championed collected and theorized from its very beginnings. As early as 1878 he had published a small study that made him the first historian of these artists if not of the group itself just four years after their first exhibition at Nadar's studio. Twenty years after the last Impressionist exhibition Duret establishes the comprehensive story of this artistic revolution: ""For the early twentieth century and the decades to follow the history of Impressionism is Duret's 'The history of the Impressionist painters'."" Laura Iamurri. Renowned for its chronological accuracy - although in many cases Duret recalls events from his own memories - this work became a reference and was widely reprinted and translated London: Grant Richards 1910; Berlin: B. Cassirer 1909. Duret dedicates a monograph to each painter he mentions with the exception of Caillebotte and places Berthe Morisot in what he refers to as ""the core group of Impressionists."" Absent from his 1878 study Paul Cézanne now considered a post-Impressionist and Armand Guillaumin make their appearance here. A true art gallery on papier japon this text of reference for generations of readers' Laura Iamurri was the first to find a legitimate place for Impressionism in French art history. Not in Carteret. 13626Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Impressionist painter. Rare photographic reproduction 6.25" x 10.5" of one of Renoir's paintings of a nude woman kneeling The image has an original signature on the lower border in black ink "Renoir." The photograph was originally part of the archive of Renoir's art dealer the great Ambrose Vollard. In order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by artists Vollard represented he had all the original paintings photographed then asked the artist to sign each photo and had the signature witnessed. This one is signed by Renoir above a stamp which reads "Seen in order to authenticate the signature of Pierre Auguste Renoir painter witnessed January 10 1911." Renoir's signature is witnessed by the mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer. To the left is his official stamp which reads "Cagnes Alpes Maritimes" and the word in the center reads "Mairie" inside of a laurel. Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 12.75" x 17". In fine condition. While we have seen several of these photographs signed very few are of a human subject making this portrait more desirable. unknown books

190986706Cagnes Cagnes-sur-Mer 1909. Fine. Cagnes Cagnes-sur-Mer 5 février 1909 10.90 x 16.40 cm 2 pages sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed by Auguste Renoir dated in his hand 5 February 1909. 2 pp. in black ink on a double leaf. Horizontal mailing fold. Renoir penned this letter at his villa Les Collettes in Cagnes where he created works of great sensuality and essayed sculpture. The painter orders brushes and refers to an expected visit from the family of Dr Emile Baudot his physician of long standing and chief medical officer of the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest. Renoir's sole pupil was the venerable doctor's daughter Jeanne Baudot of whom he painted a portrait and who sat alongside her master for a canvas by Maurice Denis. Maurice Gangnat was a patron distinguished collector and intimate friend of Renoir whom he first met in 1904 through the offices of Paul Gallimard. Upon being introduced to Renoir his pictures so delighted him that he purchased twelve forthwith at a cost of twenty thousand francs. He possessed the connoisseur's eye and Renoir permitted him to select the finest of each spring's production: ""He has the eye"" he would say of him. Between 1905 and 1917 Gangnat acquired one hundred and eighty canvases during his sojourns at Les Collettes among them thirty-six landscapes of Cagnes and its environs. ""Dear Monsieur Gangnat I have discovered upon my desk a letter which I believed long since dispatched. I was informing you that I had received notice from the Marseille Bank where you were good enough to place money on deposit for me and that I should return it to you . I take the liberty of charging you with bringing me a packet of brushes. Millaud will convey them to your residence. We continue to count upon you at the earliest opportunity. The Baudots are to pay me their annual visit toward the commencement of March. That poor doctor has been reassigned to the Gare Saint-Lazare. He was expecting it this month. . I trust you are in good health and pray advise us so that we may meet you at the station. My wife and I send you our warmest regards together with our compliments to Madame Gangnat and to Philippe ."" A charming and vivid letter from the artist to an intimate friend during his Cagnes period ordering brushes for future masterworks notably his Ode aux fleurs executed that year. unknown
