015424Edgar Degas (1834-1917), peintre, sculpteur. Copie de ses sonnets, sd [entre le 28 et le 30 septembre 1917?], 8p in-8 oblong. Rare copie ancienne des fameux sonnets de Degas, écrits en 1888 et 1890, provenant des papiers du critique d'art Arsène Alexandre (1859-1937). Ces sonnets, connus seulement des proches de Degas, ont été publiés en 1914 dans un tirage limité à 20 exemplaires sur papier japon, pour les amis ; puis en 1918 par Paul Lafond dans son Degas. Ils ne semblent pas avoir été publiés à part avant 1943. Arsène Alexandre n'en eut pas d'exemplaire mais eut cette copie, qui porte d'ailleurs une note au crayon de sa main en tête du premier poème « les sonnets de Degas ». Degas meurt le 27 septembre 1917 et dès le lendemain, Le Figaro publie en première page un article d'Alexandre sur Degas où il dit notamment : « Il a même à certaines époques de sa vie écrit des sonnets que l'on dit fort beaux », preuve qu'il ne connaissait pas les sonnets à ce moment-là. Le 1er octobre, c'est aussi Le Figaro qui publie pour la première fois, à gros tirage, un sonnet de Degas, transmis par Alexandre. Il s'agit du 5e sonnet commençant par « Il semble qu'autrefois la Nature indolente ». Cela prouve donc qu'un lecteur du Figaro lui a transmis la copie de ce sonnet ou plutôt la copie des huit sonnets, très-certainement la copie en notre possession. Nous pouvons affirmer cela car, du vivant d'Alexandre, seules deux éditions ont existé (1914 et 1918), présentant les sonnets dans un ordre différent. L'ordre de notre copie est bien celui de l'édition de 1914. De plus, après la parution du livre de Lafond, il n'y a plus d'intérêt à faire une copie de l'édition de 1914. Malheureusement, il ne nous a pas été possible d'identifier quel ami de Degas avait envoyé les sonnets à Arsène Alexandre. En février 1935, dans L'Art et les Artistes (n°154), Arsène Alexandre cite deux cours passages de sonnets pour appuyer son propos sur Degas. Le numéro est d'ailleurs largement consacré au peintre avec un article d'Alexandre d'une trentaine de pages. Provenance : papiers et ouvrages d'Arsène Alexandre dispersés à Saumur en 2018. Arsène Alexandre est mort à Brain-sur-Allones, près de Saumur. Belle copie ancienne. [353-2]
