Edgar Degas 1834-1917 has long been considered one of the greatest of the French impressionists especially concerning the female body in movement which is given a masterful homage in this intriguing volume. Degas did many monotypes "and in many cases he applied pastel over the ghost version to create a finished piece." <br /> <br /> Charles Hobson's own masterful pastel and photogravures of the female nude having a self-proclaimed "lifelong influence" by Degas are given a loving home beside Degas' words. The text was selected from letters and other material his words are not only printed typographically on pages facing the plates but overlaid in Degas' actual handwriting to the copper images created by Hobson. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter rust-red cloth with Degas' handwriting in facsimile to the cloth in black hand painted paper covered boards illustrated with a reproduction of a Degas drawing all edges uncut concertina binding eight photogravures; BFK Rives paper Meridien type quarto size 11 1/2" by 7 3/4" unpaginated 19 pp. limited edition of 45 copies this number 35 signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Boussod Valadon & Cie Paris s. d. 1889 41 x 59 cm en feuilles sous portefeuille de l'éditeur First and only edition published of this remarkable set of 15 original lithographs from the post-impressionist painter George William Thornley only 100 copies printed. Publisher's portfolio bound in boards very skilfully restored. 14 of the 15 lithographs are printed in colour black blue green mauve and different browns on broadside China paper laid on pale blue thick paper one is directly printed on thick paper. All except the last bear the stamp of Thornley's signature with the words Chez Mrs Boussod & Valadon 19 Bd Montmartre and Imp. Becquet frères à Paris. In 1888 George William Thornley was commissioned to produce a series of lithographs based on the works of Degas. These lithographs go well beyond the reproduction quality of the renowned publisher. They also demonstrate the high level of collaboration between Degas and Thornley. Thornley first selected the works to publish made the necessary changes in the preparatory drawings and even interrupted the printing at times so that improvements could be made. The importance of Thornley's engravings in Degas' work is particularly highlighted by the book dedicated to Degas by JS Boggs and published by the Metropolitan Museum of New York; a publication in which we find several of the engravings presented in the collection. An autograph letter signed Degas to an unidentified correspondent: Thursday evening Dear friend I wont be coming tomorrow not by the train which you know. So when are the new games going to begin Even with all possible good will I find myself taken off the list for Friday. Best wishes Degas. There is light mat burn around the edges and the writing gets lighter as the letter concludes. There are also two folds and two moutning remnants on the verso that affect nothing. unknown
