This set is the Alan Wofsy reprint of the historic sales entitled "Catalogue des tableaux, pastels et dessins par Edgar Degas et provenant de son atelier", for sales held at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, May 1918 & July 1919. Volume 1: 1918, ventes I + II; Volume 2: 1919, ventes III + IV. 1600 black & white illustrations. The sale results are printed in both volumes. 12" high X 9" wide, 1032 pages. ill., ril. Edgar Degas è stato uno dei principali protagonisti della pittura francese della seconda metà dell'Ottocento. Pur condividendo gli ideali impressionisti, assunse tuttavia una posizione del tutto autonoma all'interno del movimento, affrontando differenti temi e padroneggiando le più svariate tecniche di realizzazione. Pubblicata in occasione dell'esposizione torinese, la monografia presenta una selezione di dipinti, disegni e sculture di Degas che ripercorrono l'intero arco artistico di questo grande maestro, che tanto profondamente ha segnato la pittura europea agli albori dell'età moderna. Grazie ai capolavori provenienti dalle raccolte del Musée d'Orsay (che vanta uno dei nuclei più rappresentativi dell'intera produzione dell'artista) è possibile immergersi nelle atmosfere parigine degli artisti, dei letterati, dei caffè e della musica o nei bellissimi, e poco conosciuti, paesaggi francesi. E poi i soggetti più popolari dell'opera del pittore francese: i cavalli (con il famosissimo Défilé), le ballerine, con opere che spaziano in tutte le tecniche (dall'olio al pastello, alla gouache) con capolavori quali Prove di balletto in scena, Arlecchino e Colombina, Fin d'arabesque, oltre a una raccolta di sculture in bronzo, tra le quali spicca la celeberrima Piccola danzatrice di quattordici anni, scultura alta circa un metro e abbigliata con un tessuto di tulle.
