ill., br. La mostra Oltre Caravaggio è diversa da qualsiasi altra mostra. Le 200 opere esposte nelle 24 sale del Museo provengono dalle collezioni permanenti di Capodimonte. L'allestimento si propone di rilanciare il dibattito critico sul Seicento napoletano presentandone una lettura più articolata rispetto a quella del "secolo di Caravaggio" adottata da amatori e storici. È lo storico dell'arte Roberto Longhi (1890-1970) che riscopre e definisce il Seicento meridionale. Secondo lo studioso, il naturalismo di Caravaggio sarebbe la spina dorsale dell'arte napoletana. Dalle analisi di Longhi derivano gli studi seicenteschi successivi e, in gran parte, l'esposizione dei dipinti del '600 napoletano a Capodimonte, dall'apertura della Pinacoteca nel 1957. La realtà è più complessa e i curatori della mostra, Stefano Causa e Patrizia Piscitello, sulla base degli studi degli ultimi decenni, suggeriscono di riconsiderare lo schema di Longhi, ormai storicizzato, e di ripensare l'intera articolazione di un secolo che non fu solo quello di Caravaggio, ma fu soprattutto quello di Jusepe de Ribera, pittore spagnolo arrivato a Napoli nel 1616, sei anni dopo la morte di Caravaggio.

"Caravaggio a Messina" indaga il rapporto tra Michelangelo Merisi detto il Caravaggio (1571-1610) e la città di Messina soffermandosi in particolare sulle vicende relative al soggiorno dell'artista nella città mamertina, tra il 1608 ed 1609, ricostruite attraverso testimonianze coeve, o immediatamente successive, finora poco note e studiate. Nella prima parte si procede ad una opportuna contestualizzazione storica della Sicilia con particolare riferimento alla città di Messina e le vicissitudini urbanistiche, sociali, economiche e artistiche tra la fine del '500 e l'inizio dell'600, nonché quelle biografiche del pittore attraverso i documenti e gli scritti dell'epoca, senza tralasciare le ultime pubblicazioni. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato al soggiorno messinese di Caravaggio, analizzato attraverso le biografie, le fonti scritte in città ed un attento studio del contesto artistico e culturale, dei luoghi e delle personalità incontrate dall'artista lombardo. Dalla Resurrezione di Lazzaro, all'Adorazione dei Pastori, Valentina Certo si sofferma anche sulle numerose e presunte opere dipinte da Caravaggio a Messina.
