ill. «La camera ombrosa del Caravaggio», il primo dei due saggi che compongono il volume, apparso nel 1976, continua ad essere un tassello importante per il caso Merisi: è la scoperta della nascita e del significato del realismo magico del Caravaggio che, partendo dalla camera oscura di Gian Battista della Porta, ne scopre la portata sentimentale. Segue «Da Tiziano a Caravaggio, vicenda stilistica di un ritratto», uno studio che completa e ambienta il precedente, e che tratta non di una prospettiva ma di un cambio di attribuzione.

Michelangelo Merisi (1571-1610), detto il Caravaggio, fu geniale e scandaloso, vivendo e morendo nella disperata ricerca di un equilibrio inseguito e mai raggiunto, anche a causa di un carattere rissoso, con i pennelli in una mano e la spada nell'altra. Ospite fisso di bettole d'infimo ordine, frequentatore di prostitute e di amanti occasionali di ambo i sessi, fu parallelamente amato e protetto da nobili e ricchi committenti. La sua vita fu scandita dalla forzata permanenza nelle galere di varie città e dall'ospitalità offerta da autorevoli personaggi del potere laico e religioso, che oltre a commissionargli alcune delle sue opere più famose, gli offrirono protezione e in più occasioni lo sottrassero alle condanne più gravi, determinate dalla sua esuberanza, ma anche da un'innegabile propensione alla violenza. Questa è la biografia di un artista caratterizzato da tante ombre mai dissolte. Non così nelle sue tele, in cui il buio è sempre squarciato da raggi luminosi votati alla distruzione dell'oscurità che spesso ci travolge per trascinarci nel gorgo del mistero, dove la luce non ha spazio e la morte si adagia accanto alla vita, fino a soffocarla.
