Publisher's original full grey boards flat spine without lettering some rubbing blind-ruled borders on covers a scratch to the foot of the upper cover central title corners rubbed. Some foxing. Inscribed by Antoine-Marie Chenavard to his friend Antonin L. with the author's signed presentation note. The plates based on drawings by the Lyon-born architect Chenavard 17871883 depict various views of Roman Neapolitan and Sicilian monuments: 1. Portrait of the author at the time of his journey to Italy facsimile after a drawing made in Rome by Ingres in 1818. 2. View of Lake Maggiore from Arona. 3. Contemporary green half sheepskin binding with corners spine with four raised bands framed by dotted rolls gilt double fillets and floral tools triple gilt fillet border on green paper-covered boards gilt title to upper board marbled endpapers contemporary binding. Some rubbing to spine corners restored. A handsome copy. Author's copy with inkstamp to the title-page. Cf. Blackmer 334. Atabey 230. Brunet II 1831. Each plate is accompanied by a leaf of explanatory text. Plates LIX and LX are transposed in this copy. Bound in modern half green sheep with corners spine with four raised bands decorated with black fillets black sheep lettering-piece and authors name sides covered in almond-green felted paper a scratch to the lower cover. The leaves are mounted on cloth guards the preliminary leaves with some marginal soiling a few light dampstains in the margins of certain pages all leaves with marginal sunning. ""First and only Edition. Brunet states that only 200 copies were printed. Chenavard had intended to produce this work in parts of 40 livraisons with 4 plates in each see advert. at end of 1846 Relation which would result in 160 plates. Half the number actually appeared after drawings by Chenavard and Rey both The Voyage en Grèce 1858 is sometimes referred to as the 'atlas' to the second Édition of the Relation which apppeared in 1849 under a similar title. It is in fact an independent publication which contains a summary account of the journey made by Chenavard Rey and Dalgabio in 1843-4 and is of great importance for the many views it contains of Athens 27 Delphi and Ithaca.
