(1852–1929) Il fut l’une des figures majeures de la peinture naturaliste française. Élève de Gérôme et sociétaire du Salon, il reçut les plus hautes distinctions de son temps, dont la médaille d'honneur du Salon en 1885. Son œuvre, qui combine un souci du détail réaliste et une sensibilité spirituelle, a été saluée aussi bien par les critiques que par les institutions. Il est aujourd’hui représenté dans les principales collections publiques françaises, dont le musée d’Orsay.
