(1852–1929) Il fut l’une des figures majeures de la peinture naturaliste française. Élève de Gérôme et sociétaire du Salon, il reçut les plus hautes distinctions de son temps, dont la médaille d'honneur du Salon en 1885. Son œuvre, qui combine un souci du détail réaliste et une sensibilité spirituelle, a été saluée aussi bien par les critiques que par les institutions. Il est aujourd’hui représenté dans les principales collections publiques françaises, dont le musée d’Orsay.

Reliure maroquin à long grain, plats avec fleurons dorés dans un encadrement de filets dorés et à froid, dos lisse orné, couvertures et dos conservés, étui bordé, reliure de l'époque signée E. Carayon. Tirage à 120 exemplaires numérotés, les numéros 1 à 100 portent les noms des souscripteurs ; 101 et 102 sont réservés à M. Calmann-Lévy ; 113 à 120 sont offerts aux artistes, aux éditeurs et déposés à la Bibliothèque nationale (ici le n° 66 M. Paul Lucas). Dos insolé, minimes frottements aux coiffes, mors et dos, rousseurs sur tranches, claires taches de rousseurs en marges, étui frotté et choqué en tête. Bel exemplaire.
