Come si dipinge una crocifissione politicamente e religiosamente corretta? Quali figure devono essere rappresentate: solo Gesù o anche i ladroni? E ancora: perché Velasquez ha scelto di rappresentare questo momento particolare della Passione? Il volto di Cristo deve essere interamente visibile o parzialmente nascosto? I chiodi che fissarono Gesù alla croce devono essere tre o quattro? La Crocifissione, dipinto del 1632 di Diego Velasquez, è un'opera unica nella produzione pittorica dell'artista spagnolo. L'autore di questo libro, specialista dell'età napoleonica, scoprì casualmente il quadro durante una delle sue visite al Prado. Folgorato dalla potenza espressiva della Crocifissione, Lentz ha avviato un'indagine su e intorno al quadro, descrivendo le circostanze misteriose in cui fu commissionato, la tecnica di esecuzione e le traversie superate dal dipinto tra la fine del Settecento e l'inizio dell'Ottocento.
