This superb example of fine printing features a linocut by Artemio Rodriguez showing the famed Mexican singer Isabel Vargas Lizano known as Chavela wearing her trademark jorongo. Issued in commemoration of the centenary of her birth. Four decimas by renowned poets in her honor have been finely printed letterpress at the Taller Martín Pescador. The 'decima' is a ten-line form of poetry generally consisting of four stanzas forty lines in an ABBAACCDCC rhyme scheme. ill., br. Ortega y Gasset, il più grande filosofo spagnolo, meditò per tutta la vita su Velàzquez e la sua pittura. In particolare negli anni Quaranta e Cinquanta del Novecento, Ortega definisce una propria provocatoria interpretazione della figura e dell'opera di Velàzquez che, nonostante le resistenze iniziali degli storici dell'arte, ha segnato fino ad oggi la nostra interpretazione del più grande pittore spagnolo di tutti i tempi. Vissuto in un'epoca dall'accentuato formalismo e dall'esasperata convenzionalità, Velàzquez paradossalmente sa ritagliarsi poprio a corte uno spazio di libertà, svincolando l'arte dal tema rappresentato e ridandole la funzione primigenia di fissare l'attimo per l'eternità. Di fronte alla circostanza del suo tempo, pur condizionante che sia, un individuo geniale sa sempre trovare, dunque, il modo di esprimere se stesso. Degli scritti di Ortega su Velàzquez si offre qui un'ampia scelta in una nuova, accurata e felice traduzione, mentre la prefazione inquadra la proposta interpretativa di Ortega nella storia della fortuna critica del pittore. D'altro canto, le schede storico-filologiche, che accompagnano le riproduzioni dei capolavori analizzati dal filolosofo, aggiornano la loro lettura sino al fitto dibattito attuale.
