Bright clean copies inside and out. Fine. Two octavo 5-1/4" x 8-1/4" volumes bound in dark green publisher's blindstamped cloth. Illustrated with 22 bright chromolithographs of flowers. The 1891 volume ends with the October issue and contains the final chromolithograph of the series. The October 1891 issue announced that beginning with the next issue Vick's Magazine would be enlarged to three columns a page and its price reduced to fifty cents a year. Henceforth it would be published by the Vick Publishing Company with the seed business to be conducted by James Vick's Sons. The new magazine would not be as "pretentious" as CENTURY HARPER'S or SCRIBNER'S "but in proportion to the price will contain fully as much matter." Two hundred thousand copies of the first issue were printed. Kretschmer 1825-1891 studied art at the Prussian Academy of Art was renowned for his detailed drawings and watercolour paintings of traditional German costumes and was the costume designer for the Konzerthaus Berlin. First edition of this particularly rare chromolithograph sample catalogue for the noted German Coir Rug weaving firm Stevens & Schurholz. The company’s rugs were woven from the husks of coconut shells and proved to be an exceptionally durable fiber for heavily trafficked areas with several depicted in this catalogue. These include churches hotel entrance rugs restaurants dining room mats and rugs outdoor portico and veranda rugs -- exceptional image here showing not only the sample rugs but also an Aquarium fountain side table along with machine factories trains gymnasiums pools and stables. The brilliantly coloured and displayed patterns incorporate geometric pictorial and simple solid colour patterns. These Coir rugs were often used in pools bath houses and onboard ships as they were mold resistant and could be repeatedly cleaned. The company was founded in 1887 by Stevens & Schurholz as the Open Trading Company later changed to Schurholz & Sohne after the Stevens family left the business and continues to operate as the Linea Naturale company. Dating was arrived at not only through the particular sleeves for the women’s fashions as well as one image of German infantry soldiers wearing Chevaulegers Waffenrock uniforms with the model of officer’s caps used until about 1897. Ferns varieties illustrated within encompass Royal Fern Broad Buckler Fern Harstongue Mountain Buckler Fern Holy Fern Brittle Bladder Fern and many others. Heath 1843-1913 was a noted British botanist civil servant editor of Gilpin’s “Forest Scenery†and a pioneering force in the Open space and Green Belt movements across Victorian England. First edition of this lavish work reproducing the flags carried by U.S. Army infantry cavalry and artillery units during the Civil War featuring headquarters flags battle flags corps flags pennants and guidons. Following the Civil War both Sherman and Sheridan attempted to regularize unit flags and recommended that battle names be omitted from the flag and unit registers. This work compiled by US Army Brig. Gen. Holabird 1826-1907 was carried out towards the end of his service as Quartermaster which ended June 16 1890. William Burk ca. 1857-1905 and John McFetridge 1844-1903 launched their company in 1877 by purchasing William Harding’s printing house and specialized in chromolithographic trade cards advertising book illustrations calendars and other material until about 1900.
