Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists twins born on 21 November 1883. Due to the illness of their father they grew up in the care of their uncle Dr E B Shuldham who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age and resulted in a debut aged 13 at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters with nature studies in the Japanese style. Kipling's complete series of popular tales told by 'Puck' traditionally a name for a malicious spirit or demon of popular superstition and from the 16th century the name of a mischievous goblin or Hobgoblin similar to that appearing in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' the fairy scene from which is acted out here. Second volume has a blue ink ownership stamp to fly-leaf otherwise internally clean. Moderate wear to cloth including some loss to headcap. Very good overall. The Jungle Book and its sequel comprise a selection of short stories-the best-known being the three tales centring on the adventures of the abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli.
