In 1840 Leech was employed by the London Magazine and Bentley's Miscellany to supply illustrations. The following year he was recruited by a new journal, Punch Magazine, founded by Mark Lemon and Henry Mayhew. Leech's humourous drawings were extremely popular and was one of the main reasons the magazine became a great success.

Each illustration and accompanying text in a distinct decorative border. GORDON N. RAY The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914 notes that in his later years Owen turned to "original designs of his own." This mid-Victorian time period was the heyday of chromolithography printing with this a brilliant example. Embossed cloth decorated in gilt and green with gilt lettering. Lovely example of Victorian binding beveled edges endpapers toned slight toning to a few fore-edges not affecting plates which are brilliant and clean. Bound in full olive green cloth boards with paper title labels to spines. Minor wear to edges of boards and spine ends of all volumes. Wear / chipping / browning to title labels. Minor dampstaining to corners of boards of some volumes; although interior pages seem to be free from staining. Some volumes have minor soiling and/or discoloration to covers. Each volume contains illustrations - most in black and white with a few in color. Occasional smudge marks occasional tear to a page in the margin from opening the pages and sporadic spots of foxing - but overall very clean and bright interiors. Rippling to some of the illustrations which are printed on a different paper stock. Signature of previous owner in pen to front free endpapers of most volumes. All bindings remain strong. Foldouts from 1852 and 1853 are not hand-colored. Therefore of the expected 195 Cruikshank plates only 194 are present and 191 are as called for. Additionally Cohn calls for the 1835-37 to have been printed by Tilt these have Bogue on the title pages. Overall a worn and slightly imperfect set of the full run of the Comic Almanack suitable for savoring the George Cruikshank plates and text illustrations. . David Bogue etc hardcover

The exterior of the case has fraying on edges and scuffing. There are 2 books on the lower part of the easel when it is opened. One is 'Pen Pictures' A short description of each of the books in the Bible. The second is Bible Study. The upper portion contains 2 interior scrolls with a window for each of bible pictures. These are in color. The metal key is in the pocket but the scrolls do not work. The entire scroll appears to be intact but will not turn.
