Boards and spine are straight. Although binding is is in need of repair the individual signatures are still intact. Lacking frontispiece and title page otherwise complete with mostly b&w in the style of the arts & crafts era in which the book was created and many color illustrations. Vol.1 : 'English Scottish & Welsh Landscape Verse' chosen by John Betjeman and Geoffrey Taylor with lithographs by John Piper. The BOOK is in Very Good or better condition. The WRAPPER is neatly price-clipped and is in Very Good condition with small losses to the spine ends. Vol.2 : 'The Poets Eye' anthology chosen by Geoffrey Grigson with 16 lithographs by John Craxton. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. The WRAPPER is complete and also is in like near Fine condition with some light age related markings to the rear panel. This title is the scarcest of the set to find with its wrapper in such collectible condition. Many copies have been broken up with the striking lithographs having been sold separately some for very high prices. Écrits en pages de garde (de la nièce de Jean Mariotti). Exemplaire numéroté. Un condensé de la vie et de l’oeuvre (morceaux choisis) de Jean Mariotti. Jean Mariotti (1901-1975) est fils d’un condamné au bagne. Enfant de la Brousse calédonienne, il subit la double influence des cultures européenne et océanienne. À 24 ans, il quitte la Nouvelle-Calédonie et s’installe à Paris. À la faveur d’un regain d’intérêt pour le roman colonial, il publie un premier roman fortement autobiographique “ Tout est peut-être inutile”. Sa connaissance de la colonie pénitentiaire lui inspire “Remords”, alors que ses “Contes de Poindi” puisent leur origine dans les récits de la femme kanak qui l’a adopté à sa naissance. Jean Mariotti publie son livre majeur “A Bord de l’Incertaine”, en 1942. Après la guerre il désire retourner en Nouvelle-Calédonie, mais après vingt-trois ans d’absence, son séjour le déçoit. De retour à Paris, il publie le dernier de ses contes “La Conquête du Séjour Paisible”, puis un ultime roman “Daphné”. En 1962, il est élu président de la Société des gens de lettres. Il travaille ensuite pour l’ORTF, anime des émissions littéraires et écrit des pièces radiophoniques. Il meurt à Paris en 1975 où il repose au Père-Lachaise.
