1860170493France: c.1860s. An intricately executed example of French Japonisme attributed to one of the great 19th-century French periodical artists and seemingly signed with an unusual form of his signature "JaneLe". Throughout his three-decade career Ange-Louis Janet 1815-1872 produced illustrations for newspapers including L'llustration Le Tour du monde and Journal amusant. In this selection he captures European fascination with Japanese aesthetics providing careful depictions of costume and architecture supported by natural elements such as flowers and trees. He also highlights elements of the country's evolving modernity such as bowler-hatted gentlemen carrying a western umbrella. Each drawing is marked up as if for publication although we have found no record of these drawings appearing in print. 5 illustrations in black ink and watercolour on card or paper each sheet c.310 x 210 mm first sheet with lettered slip of paper laid down annotated in crayon and blue pencil. Housed in recent brown folder. A few blemishes chipping 25 mm closed tear at head of third sheet slightly affecting illustration drawings otherwise unaffected: a pleasingly preserved collection. unknown
