The second edition of Volume III of a three-volume set in a quarter morocco binding with gilt detailing to the spine and pebbled cloth to the boards. Silk moire end papers. All edges gilt. Illustrated with ninety-eight full page drawings. Collated complete. Charles Albert d'Arnoux best known as Bertall 1820-1882 was a French illustrator engraver caricaturist and early photographer. In this work he observes life away from home in the winter spring summer and autumn through words and pencil sketches. In a quarter morocco binding with pebbled cloth boards. Externally smart with light shelf wear to the boards and a little rubbing to the tail of the spine. Front hinge is slightly strained to the front blank but is firmly held by cords. A UNIQUE SET OF BON-A-TIRER PROOFS B.A.T.s many signed by Bertall of the wood-engravings used in Balzac's "Petites misères de la vie conjugale" one of the truly great 19th-century French illustrated books. This set includes 60 proofs on Chinese paper of which 36 are SIGNED by Bertall to confirm his approval of the final image and one of which features a small ink sketch. There is no record of any other impressions of any of these prints on Chinese paper or of any signed impressions on any paper at all. Generally in excellent condition although a few are creased or spotted. 12.5 x 12 cm and smaller. UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT. IT IS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL TO FIND HAND-SIGNED PRINTS EARLIER THAN 1875. <br/><br/> Chlendowski unknown
