1728002792<p>London: Tonson 1728. Un volume 205 cm di 7-477 pagine; è presente sia la numerazione araba che la segnatura A-Z8 Aa-Gg8 Hh7. Legatura coeva in piena pelle con decorazioni impresse. Difetti alla legatura cerniera anteriore fenduta usure agli angoli dei piatti piccole mancanze alle cuffie e qualche usura ala dorso. Minime tracce del tempo alle pagine interne qualche lieve brunitura o piccolissime fioriture una gora chiara alla pagina finale e alle seguenti due pagine bianche ma nel complesso buonissime condizioni interne. Titolo manoscritto in riquadro al dorso dove compare anche un 1 impresso e dorato di tomagione. Spesso infatti questa edizione si accompagnava con un secondo volume contenente lo sviluppo delle polemiche sollecitate dall'opera volume peraltro a sé stante e sovente di diverso stampatore. La prima edizione è del 1714 cui seguirono alcune ristampe. Nel 1723 apparve la 'seconda edizione' allargata. Altre aggiunte si ritrovano cinque anni dopo nella quinta edizione: nello stesso anno ne venne pubblicata un'edizione in due volumi. The third edition 1724 contained further revisions and additions and as an appendix A Vindication of the Book. Further editions appeared in 1725 1728 and 1729. Part II of the Fable reproduced as volume 4 of the present facsimile collection was first published in 1729. The 1732 edition of both parts was the last to appear in Mandevilles lifetime. hardcover
172911<p>Barnard Mandeville published a pamphlet on "the Grumbling Hive" in 1705. This was then included in "The Fable of the Bees" in 1714 which itself went through six editions and important additions</p><p>A second volume was published in 1729 in the form of a dialogue between Horatio and Cleomenes and presents a proposed history of civil society based upon Mandeville's views of human nature.</p><p>Mandeville was a leading public intellectual of the early 1700's. His influence continues as an a icon of Libertarianism Hayek himself a follower. In the eighteenth century his respondents and critics is a long list including Adam Smiith and Rousseau.</p><p>His thesis that Vice was a productive force in the economic wellbeing of a comunnity seems harmless on its face but Mandeville presented his view while critiqueing his own society both in its moral hypocricy and the failure to produce results</p><p>Vol. of this set isthe sixth and last edtion wih all the added essays etc from the precedin geds.</p><p>Then in 1729 Maneville published Fable of the Bees Part II. These six dialogue were quickly reprinted. This is Vol ii of this set and completes Mandevilles authorized text.</p><p>This set is the final definitive edition of Mandevilles unfolding editions of the Fable</p> vol 1, Tonson; vol 2.Roberts hardcover
