1861H33483Norfolk VA 1861. Very good. 2 1/2 page letter dated March 14 1861 from Rev. LeRoy M. Lee of the Granby St. Methodist Church in Norfolk VA to Rev. J. S. Martin pastor at the Central Methodist Church in Staunton VA about 200 miles NW of Norfolk requesting a few single men who were good preachers. There were a number of circuits near Norfolk that needed some reinforcements and Lee was hoping that Martin could recommend some young men for employment in the Southern Methodist church circuits. ".there may be some of your junior members who may desire to find ministerial employment in a Southern Conference -- if that term can be now justly applied to the VA Conference; or it may be that your body is full and you may have some for whom you have no field of labor." Lee points out that the circuits are among Virginia residents who are intelligent wealthy and populous. Lee was part of one of the most distinguished early American Methodist families; his uncle Jesse Lee is considered the father of New England Methodism and for many years he was the presiding elder of the Richmond Conference. unknown
