An edition of Diderot's subversive classic illustrated by Bernard Naudin, one of the great book illustrators of the early 20th century. Includes a striking etched portrait of Diderot by Naudin, here present in two states: the first state on Japanese paper and the final state on Chinese paper. Also includes seven wood-engravings by Perrichon after designs by Naudin. Edition limited to 750 numbered copies, of which THIS IS ONE OF ONLY 25 COPIES BEAUITFULLY PRINTED IN BLACK AND RED ON FINE CHINESE PAPER. Squarish 8vo. Loose as issued in original wraps. Uncut, largely unopened, fine, and bright. Original folding case a bit worn but still structurally sound.
BOTH OF THE RARE "NUM…ROS SP…CIMEN", IN PRISTINE CONDITION, of this important bibliophile periodical designed to celebrate wood engraving. ***** The first "numÈro spÈcimen" was published in 1896 to encourage people to subscribe to "L'I'mage". 8 pp + 5 hors-texte plates. It features wood-engraved illustrations after LepËre, Willette, De Feure (in color), Merson, Steinlen, ChÈret, and others, and A FULL-PAGE HORS-TEXTE WOOD ENGRAVING BY LEPERE ("La priËre", Lotz-Brissonneau 254) PRINTED ON EXTREMELY FINE ARCHES LAID PAPER. ***** The second "numÈro spÈcimen" was published in 1904 and advertises the revival of the publication, which never took place. 8 pp. + 5 loosely-inserted hors-texte plates, each with an original wood engraving: DÈtÈ after Cottet, Ruffe after Degas, Labat after De Feure, Maylander after Vierge, and Perrichon after Rodin. Both issues printed on five wove paper. Large 4to. Bound in publisher's gorgeous color-printed wraps, the second adorned with a color wood engraving by Vibert after Bellery-Desfonatines. THESE SPECIMEN ISSUES--ESPECIALLY THE FIRST--ARE VERY RARE, FAR MORE SO THAN THE 12 REGULARLY-PUBLISHED ISSUES.

Numerous wood-engravings and woodcuts including A FINE PROOF ON CHINE OF LABOUREUR'S "AU LUXEMBOURG" (Laboureur I, 572), his first important print. Laboureur was 19 when this issue came out, and its publication marked his being recognized as a consequential artist. This copy, exceptionally, includes A "FUME" (early proof) OF THE WOOD-ENGRAVING AFTER THOMAS LAWRENCE, SIGNED IN PENCIL BY BELTRAND AND JUSTIFIED "FumÈ n∫ 1". Folio.
